Narrow front tractors ?

I live in one of the prarie wheat growing states where wide front tractors are /were the norm.
Used to be some 40's-- 50's smaller tractors in the area that were narrow front, got me wondering when they quit making narrow front tractors.
I remember seeing narrow front or even single front options in the 4020 JD operators manuals of the 60's.

Who can tell me who was the last company to make narrow /tricycle front tractors, or are they still avalible. ??? TIA

i know they dont make them anymore, and i want to say the last narrow tractor was built in 1976 for some reason. Or that it was an option on a tractor up until then, but im not sure

I believe the 30 series, like the 4030 was the last john deere to be offered with a narrow front, as far as IH the 86 series as in the 686 were more than likely the last to have narrow fronts as an option.

Ford had a narrow front option starting in '55 (on rowcrop models only, of course) and continued through '76, although they were very uncommon on Fords after about '70. There was also a VERY uncommon single front wheel option for most of those years.

Narrow front tractors were made to mount front cultivators and mounted corn pickers. As combines took over corn harvest and rear monted cultivators became popular narrow fronts were no longer needed.

I did have a 4230 Gas John Deere built in 1973, it had a narrow front. I have a 11.00 X 12.00 single front with yoke that came off of another 4230.Any 4230 with a split pedestal is rare.

The newest ford model I have ever seen with a narrow front was of the thousand series, as in 5000 and 7000 and they were made until 1976. So yes I believe these to be the last ford offered with a narrow front.

According to the Don McMillian John Deere books, you could get a narrow front on a 4040, because one was ordered that way. Part of the reason that a narrow front isn't found on the bigger tractors is the weight. All that weight on two skinny tires in front sinks fast, whereas you could put a larger tire on a wide front and spread the weight.

In reply to ford farmer, the 4230 Gas would use 10 gallons per hour while on a a PTO irrigation pump. I still use one with a Loader, it will use about 4 gallons per hour, this is at idle about half of the time.
