Safety Reminder: Gasoline is flamable!!

Had something new happen today, I caught my John Deere B on fire. The float in the carburator had stuck and flooded both cylinders, so I removed the spark plugs and cranked it over with the starter to blow the extra gas out. Something I have done many times... This time the spark plug wire shorted with the frame rail and ignited the gas I was expelling along with the oil pan that was catching it. Fortunately, I had a bucket of water handy and quickly extinguished the fire. The oil pan and a plug wire were the only things damaged, but I don't think I'll be trying that stupid move again.

Please be careful everyone.

God watches over us simple folks.

Lucky you and that water didn't just spread it. Water is not to be used on oil fires.

I really lucky. The water worked to put out the fire on the tractor because it was just a film of gas on it, basically I washed it away. I kicked the oil pan out from under the tractor and let it melt into a plastic puddle.

I have heard several related stories just like yours over the years.
Those 2 cyl. everything is a down hill flow right into the cylinders. Then when the plugs are pulled out the gas squirts right on the wires. Grounding out the mag or wires will really help to prevent them from catching fire.
