What would be a fair hourly wage be ? I have a fellow that wants me to restore his John Deere A
for him I am not the fasted worker anymore!

Question number Two= What is the going hourly rate for driving a Tractor ?
During spring & fall I live in Southeastern Mn.

me to at 68 you slow down i retired as a machinist several yrs. ago i get between 10.00 & 12.00 for field work usually try to figure a flat rate for tractor mechanical work since i can kinda work at my speed just my 2 cent's worth i'm in texas

Some years back neighbor wanted me to run his corn planter. His uncle and his son would help with keeping seed boxes full and liquid fertalizer tanks filled. We settled on $7.00/hr.
And he bought dinner.
Got a good yeild too.

I agree with Petetx. get an estimate for the work, then figure what % of it you can feel good about. write a specific agreement on parts, materials, and changes made. Keeping things clear, keeps friends. JimN

Forget the hourly wage and give him a finished price. If you both agree on it then it don't matter if you are slow or not as long as you know what you are doing. Keep track of your hours for your own reference and then when you are done you will know exactly how much per hr you got and whether you got screwed or he did. At least you will know what to charge for the next one! And you probably won't get a next one because they won't pay enough for you to make anything off it.The chance of both parties being completely happy in the end is next to ZERO.

For driving jobs around here its normally 10-15 an hour by check 8-10 if its cash.

On the restoration, I'd do it by the job and specify what it includes. Over the years I've reconditioned a lot of tractors (steam clean, sand, paint, and spruce up). For a 50-80 hp without a cab I've charged 1000 plus they buy the parts and such from me, my markup on parts is 22% using OEM paints and finishes.

Local plant here pays $43.42 for the skilled union jobs but that maynot be much help in this issue.
The set price finished price is fairest for all. You do have to both together go through the tractor with a "fine toothed comb" and write down what is to be restored and to what extent. Also a plan B for extras should they appear.

Most Deere dealers in SE Minnesota are at 70.00 a shop hour. Like others said, give him completed project quote.

I agree wih Buck on this form. Been redoing my tractor and I got into it. I found more needing repaired are worked on after I started.
So if you two agree in writing as to what you are to do and "fix" plus a price. Then that would be ok. But in writing you would add " any other work besides what has be stated on this writen agree ment. Will be extra on charge. Then both sign it and date it with a wittness to.

Start at minimum wage and adjust for experiance or lack thereof. Cash only as in contract labor. David.....

I have done both of the above. Only did one complete tractor and felt I lost my shirt on it. Was a 9N Didn't appear to need much on the outside but wound up rebuilding the engine, Trans, and replacing all the sheet metal except the hood. I feel I am fussy and don't want to have to go back and fix something after the paint is applied. I also use Acrylic Urethane paints. Wound up the total bill was right at $6000 and only $1000 of that labor. I had Way more hours in it than that though.

As to the tractor driving/farm labor I help a neighbor cut silage in the fall. Started at $10 with this guy bout 10 years ago and last fall he paid $16.

On the tractor driving issue ! I forgot to mention I have worked for this person for twelve years spring & fall I run a Cat Challenger 75 & currently getting twelve dollars an hour.
THANKS for the GOOD INFO.

This fellow has been paying you $12 per hour.....so you both should be satisfied with that.....he knows your work speed....take a 20 min. break morning and afternoon.....Let him help find and pick up parts......

Get you a notebook and a receipt book, keep very good records......start a new page each day.....at the bottom of each page and on the same line.....HOURS WORKED.....@$12 =......Total parts cost listed above..TOTAL $........

this way you can thumb through each day and know the investment so far..
HE SHOULD PAY FOR PARTS EACH DAY....AND PAY YOU EACH WEEK...
Give him a receipt and keep one for yourself...

some of these parts could be expensive, you don't want your money tied up in parts.....take mother out to dinner after church..........Don

Give him a price for labor.. he buys the parts because there is the unknown when its opened up.
Compensate for being a little slower[a lot of us are there]

Some Govt. department should have the going rate for the Tractor.
