My Cub is 6 volt Pos ground. What is the best way to change it over to a 12 volt system, Alt 12v gen ??? Coil What do i need to do

Could do like the ol' boy did on my M.

Swapped the generator out for a 12 volt generator, put 'er in gear, released the clutch and backed out the door.

Runs good. :>)

Heck no. Original coil that came on the tractor.

Will probably need a set of points in 15 or 18 years tho. :>)

6 volt works fine on a cub
however if you insist on changing then look on farmallcub.com lots of info from guys who have done it and pictures also. there is a prefered alternator and you have to change to a negative ground with an alternator
simpler just to change your battery cables out with a new set from bil poor on that site

You"ll need 12 volt light bulbs installed, a twelve volt battery and I would install a volt meter in place of the amp meter. Install a twelve volt coil and have the generator rewound for twelve volts. I converted a J D 40 to twelve volt neg. ground but I went with a twelve volt single pole alternator. Starts with a lot of kick. You won"t have to worry about the starter unless you crank on it a long time to start the tractor. I have a 59 cub that I was going to convert, but I haven"t been able to find an alternator that will fit under the hood. rw

NIX the change from ammeter to voltmeter. The voltmeter tells you nothing about battery charging. It only tells you the battery ought to charge IF it was connected. The ammeter tells you about energy going to and coming out of the battery.

The main reason detroit shows a volt meter is that its much easier to wire properly than an ammeter.

Single wire not single pole.
Given the extra expense of over the three wire and the lack of low rpm self energization. Go with the three wire alt if you insist.
We kept out 6V tractors 6V and they start just fine in a Canadian winter.
Too many times a 6V to 12V conversion is a "solution" to a failing electrical system and carburation/engine problems.

Hey Buckanddeere. Starting was not a problem. Tractor started and ran great, but the generator needed rebuilt and I wanted to eleminate a lot of ugly wiring. Exciting the alternator is not a problem either. Open up the throttle one time and it stays excited until it is shut down. Postitive ground is much more efficient than negative, 12 volt batteries are easier to come by, all the ugly wires are gone, lights are much brighter. If twelve volts weren't better they'd still be making six volt systems........rw

Howdy Gerald J, EE. To each his own I guess. If the charging system is putting out 14.6 volts, why would you worry about amps? I feel the only reason to keep a tractor 6 volts is to keep it origional and there's nothing wrong with that. Maybe in the future I'll rewind the generator to 12 volt and put it back on. rw
