JUST CANT GET A QUALIY TYPE A VC I HAVE BEEN TO TWO SHOPS AND ONE DID NOT EVEN GET IT TO CHARGE AND THE OTHER CHARGED AT THE SHOP BUT IN AND OUT WHEN INSTALLED ON 8N FORD..chinese junk i am sure...There must be someone that makes aquality type a 6 volt vr...Thanks in advance

To the best on my knowledge Fords of the vintage of yours use a B circuit charging system. It has an internally grounded field in the generator, with the Voltage regulator supplying voltage to the field. This is not compatible with an A circuit regulator. The A circuit system has an internal connection to voltage in the generator, and controls the field magnets by variable grounding inside the regulator. SO unless the system has ben changed to an A circuit, the system will not work. If you are in doubt on this topic, look up A circuit and B circuit generators, and also make sure yours is one or the other! Jim

e said on another forum that he has a Ford *N tractor and those are definitely "A"- circuit systems, NOT "B".

The 9N and 2N use one type and the 8N uses the other. Cannot tell you what is used on what model tractor. Could it be that the parts supplier is giving you the one for the 9N-2N and not the 8N? Not realizing there is a difference?

NLY, the earliest few small generator (first 12250, I recall) used a "B" circuit generator. You are not likely to find one of those! After that all the 9N and 2N tractors used a simple cut out (not a VR) until the 8N and after that the 8N used the "A" -circuit system. No parts supplier provides the early "B" -circuit VR. It is a relic of the past. If you have a working unit, it is "gold".

PARTS MAN ACTUAL;LY TRIED A b WHICH WOULD NOT WORK..aLL INFO POINTS TO A TYPE A BUT ANY THAT HAVE BEEN TRIED ARE JUNK...tHE LAST ONE WAS ALL WIRED UP IN THE SHOP AND WORKED PERFECT BUT WHEN INSTALLED ON TRACTOR nOTHING..lIGHT TAP WITH SCREWDRIVER HANDLE AND AWAY IT WENT BUT WILL NOT STAYAS IT CUTS OUT AND WILL NOT START UNLESS A LIGHT TAP SO??THANKS

If you adjust the cutout relay gap (while disconnected from the Bat terminal and not running) a tiny bit closer, it will likely work. Incremental adjustment only. .001inch at a time. Test it with the cover on every time. the cover affects the magnetic fields inside. Sorry about the misinfo, I have experience with older N series. Jim
