Yup cheapened up all these new b ig tractors and then have to ad weights to hold them to the ground. The old Stiegers and Big
Buds didn't need weights and pulled just fine. The Big Bud was in the 400-800or 1000 Hp range and the Stieger had the tiger at the 460area so not like they were a lot less HP for the weight and needed more for more power to the wheels. Our biggest problem is the tires are tired or getting tired and the cost of tires tends to prevent wanting to spend as much as the tractor cost for new rubber. It would make the tractor more efficient on fuel which would be a good argument for the tires.

I doubt that reducing the mass of iron relative to steel makes more than a few pennies difference in manufacturing. Added on weights allows the removal for jobs that don't require the traction such as pulling a grain cart so that soil compaction is not so great. I know that few of us shift weights according to the job but we know that it is the proper procedure.

The tire issue is nothing new. In the early to mid 70's I transported a lot of farm/construction equipment all across this country. In the big wheat fields in the north west, the rubber tired tractors had to compete with crawlers. The argument was that the tire cost was much higher than the cost of the under carriage of a track tractor. Under carriage life was phenomenal, as they stayed on top of the soil, and the grain stubble lubricated the tracks in a fashion, where as tires were always slipping. As for weight, if you look at the specs on like the 500hp range the new JD's for example, are in some cases heavier from the get go. More efficient engines, better hydraulics and the biggest selling feature is comfort and convenience.

The other big difference is that many modern implements are designed to run at a higher speed than years ago. Higher speed means that the same drawbar power
can be put to the ground with less tractive effort and thus less tractor weight required. This makes for more efficient operation and, like you say, less soil
compaction.

The reason I was told by a Cat dealer in WA was the crawler didn't powder up the top so bad and saved errosion from wind and water both. they also had push fans with a shunt to keep the air flow from blowing the dirt around for visibility.
