Question about electric fences and insulators

Can 12/2 UF be used to carry the load underground from the charger to the fenced in area? Its about an 80 foot run.
Thank you in advance for your time and thoughts.

No, UF is only rated for 600V and an electric fence runs 7,000V+. Get a roll of proper insulated electric fence wire for the hot side. You can use regular uninsulated fence wire for the ground side. Or you can put the charger at the fenced area and use the UF to carry the 120V AC to power the charger.

X2. If you would like to prove our statements, hold a piece of UF wire by the insulation while it is hooked to the electric fence. The result will shock you!

I had enough run-ins with an electric fence in my younger days to believe anything you say with out testing it. LOL

Do not, I repeat DO NOT put your head on an electric fence while reaching through (grounded) cattle panel to dump a water trough...

When I was a kid, kids from town would come out for the day. Dad was adamant that we inform them about the electric fence, and not to touch it(it was an old IH fencer, and gave a horrible jolt). We would warn them, and sure enough, the first thing they would do, if we turned or backs, walk over and grab the fence!!! But only once.

I have used romex... for a buried path under gates with success, but it was in a 3/4 inch pvc pipe.. which eventually filled with water and it still worked well enough to keep the fences on the other side of the gate plenty hot. No evidence or sounds or arcing in the romex. Also a 30 foot run from the charger in the barn, out to the fence line...

It will not work well. Double insulated electric fence wire is made for this purpose. I like to run it through PVC conduit so that if it is damaged it is easy to replace, however that is not necessary.

No.

Fencer puts out very high voltage with very low amps.

House wiring is insulated for relatively high amps, mid range voltage.

The household wiring will allow the high voltage to leak through the insulation.

They make special insulated fencing wire that has insulation designed for the very high voltages. Even that tho, any little nick and it will leak out some sparks. Usually want to put it inside more insulated tube under ground.....
