Stanadyne Injection Pump

I took my pump off for a rebuild and wasn t smart enough to line up the marks before I took it off. I know how to time the pump to the tractor. Turn the fly wheel to TDC and line up the marks on the pump. Did I screw up by not timing before removal?

makes no difference. make sure u turn the engine now so number 1 cyl is on COMPRESSION at TOP DEAD CENTRE. pull out the glow plug for number
one so you can feel the compression. line up the engine timing marks next,... to what ever the factor spec. is , then you install the pump
which will also have dots on the drive shaft. then once installed with out pinching the seals you line up the 2 marks in the pump timing
window by pulling the pump to you or moving it towards block. and done. be nice to know what tractor.

Makes a difference what tractor it is. If it has a flat
plate on the side then youre ok . But if the plate has
a line coming out of it attached to the fuel filter... like
3000 Ford or 291 Massey... then line up the chisel
mark on the pump flange to the 2 degrees mark on
the timing gear cover.

You noted he didn't say what he is working on. How do you know his engine has glow plugs? Depending on what he is working on it may be as simple as lining up a dot in the pump's slot with one on the shaft tang. Or if the shaft is in the pump, it may be keyed or otherwise indexed to the gear it mates with. I would consider removing the rocker arm cover before pulling glow plugs, or injectors, likely needs the valves set anyway. Get the valves "on the rock" for #1's companion cylinder to put #1 at TDC compression.

Best to know what he is working on before going further with how to do it. JMHO

well yes! lots of lack of info , BUT as i say i am presuming the 282 or its relation. , but yes you are correct. but on 282 to pull a glow
plug basically take less than one minute. and most stuff on here is ihc. and if they are too lazy to give info as to what they are working on
we must presume a lot. then you watch and see pots of these posts are fly by nighters, ask and disappear and dont work with you anyhow. so
next time i will answer his question with a big NO.

On the end of the pump drive shaft there is a punch mark or dot look in side the pump there is also a punch mark or dot those need to be lined up. The shaft and the slot inside the pump are
slightly of center so not put on properly could seize the head on the pump. Never take the wire of the throttle lever till pump is mounted or you will loose governor weight in side pump. At
any rate the dots line up should get you back in time then you can recheck in the window. That's what I learned at pump school back in the day. Bob

Sorry guys, I thought I had John Deere 3020 with a Stanadyne pump typed in. I must have edited it out. Thanks for the replies.

Look in the pump opening where the shaft goes and see if there is a dot in one end of the slot the shaft engages, then look at the drive end of the shaft and see if it has a dot. Line the two dots up and put it together. Be sure you turn the pump in the right rotation if you have to turn it to match the shaft. lube the shaft seals with some oil and work them in carefully, especially the first one which has the open side lips going into the pump bore first. They make tools to hold the seals closed when installing the pump over them. A small screwdriver and a dull 90 degree pick, are tools I have used to get the lips started in without rolling the seal inside out as the inner one starts into the pump bore. I don't call it a wrinkling issue with the seals, the inner one can turn inside out and let fuel into the engine if the lip of that inner seal catches and rolls the seal over. Others will likely have their own tricks to do this they will pass on..
