My oldest son and his FFA class has started getting his new to him plow cleaned up to be painted. It is nearing the time to start making arrangements to get some new tires for it. The front 2 tires are 6.50-16 size with 1 having the 3 rib front tractor type tread, while the other side has an implement style tread. I'm assuming the tires on it now may be originals. What is the correct tread style for the front wheels ? From what I've researched online, the rear tire size is supposed to be a 4.00-12. Am I correct on this and what is the proper style tread for it ?

All 3 tires are of the implement type as on the left side. And if the plows were power lift the left tire was a thread tire as like a rear tractor tire for the grip to lift the plow. I still have dads plow like that with those French and Hecht wheels. And I learned to plow with it.

Actually I think most plows were sold without tires and what ever used tires the buyer could find were put on. Only exception would have been the rear tire and those were a tapered tread tire that the tread would run flat in the furrowe and were a 3:50 x 12 tire but most beople used a 4:00x12 tire or as a small road trailer tire a 4:80x12 tire. But very seldom were all tires new from dealer. I had a 55H 3-12 inch for years and it is now in a colection with the 51 A that I pulled it with plus the 49 B I had.

Leroy has it. We used old truck tires on our plow if we needed a tire. They were all hydraulic lift though. Even added hydraulics to the old Oliver plow and converted to rubber tires except for the tail wheel.

i have 2 55 a bh plows . 1 has a lever for adjusting,the other has a crank. both are hydraulic lift.
1 with lever dad bought new in 52 with his new A the other i bought used in 89 from a dealer for $60. i was buying my first plow n barterd to get it at that price

Miller Tire will have tires for your plow. Implement tread on the furrow and as stated bar type tire for the land wheel if clutch lift.

Om the clutch lift plows we had we never had anything but old automobile tires and at that time we did not even know what an agressive type of tire was and never had a problem with the clutch side tire sliding, the tires were worn too much for to use on the road. Last clutch lift type of plow we had was an Oliver 3-12 inch bought with the JD A tractor in 1969 and traded of the next year on the JD 55H plow.

Here are a few pics of my plows. You can see I'm not too particular about what tires I put on them as long as they are functional. Also a picture of the hitch all my plows have. Have never seen a hitch like that shown on your plow on aa 55
ABH plow.

the guy asked about correct tires for this plow for his son's class restoration. why would he even think of putting old used tires on it, when there is the correct tires for it to make the restoration complete and looking good. i also dont think that hitch is original to that plow. plus think its a #55 KBH model . my letters are worn off already.

Rustred I wish I had a better picture of the hitch. It's definitely not like the pics of David in Kansas with the big rectangular ring. This one has a spring loaded hook that attaches to the trailer pin adapter, that is sitting in the top left corner of the plow frame. The trailer pin allows it to adapt to a ring. Maybe it will work ! If not we'll have to come up with something different. He really doesn't need any trip protection as there are not any rocks here, maybe at best an occasional small tree root.

I'm glad he has an interest in working on old farm equipment and tractors. It's definitely not a cheap hobby but it keeps him busy and out of trouble. It always makes me proud for both of us to work together on something to get it in a usable state again, then watch him in action with the small acreage he farm's with it.

I want to give a big thanks to everyone for the pictures and replies. This information will definitely be a help moving forward in this project.

(quoted from post at 01:09:12 11/20/22) Actually I think most plows were sold without tires and what ever used tires the buyer could find were put on..

The IH dealer we had in the '60's did that. I think every piece of new machinery that came off his lot had used car tires on it with little or no tread. My Dad bought a new 3 bottom plow from him that came with tires like that. We used it that way for years. When I painted the plow last winter I put a pair of used snow tires on it from a car I used to have.

I restored a 2 bottom manual lift John Deere plow about 10 years ago. Depending on how far they pull it apart, there are a few odd ball bolts on that thing. Don't loose them!! I had to go through my scrap pile to find one of those odd ball bolts I didn't think I needed and luckily I still had it.
