Using synthetic oil for the old tractors

I have a 1959 mf65 gas engine & was wondering if anybody has switched from 10/30, 10/40 regular oil to the synthetic oil? What was the outcome? My tractor uses no oil with regular oil, but just asking.

Do it and don't look back. if your engine is well kept and oil changed (as your statement indicates) just do a full change with filter and run it. 10-40 is great for mild climates or summer, 10-30in the north. Jim

I use full synthetic. There really isn't very much difference between regular oil and synthetic. The synthetic is regular oil they remove the stuff that gunks up an engine and replace it with synthetic products.

Using a hd oil that has all the additive packages is much more important than using a full synthetic base oil. The additives must be there no matter which base oil is used. Simi and blends are fine unless your above/near the arctic circle. In which case a full synthetic oil will be needed.

Now, with that being said.... HD oils have very high tbn or base numbers that super cleans the engine over time. There are a few cases where switching to a hd oil has actually cleaned up the engine and remove sludge so that eventually bad gaskets and seals were now exposed. Thus cleaning them up made the old porous parts start to leak oil. The oil does not destroy the gaskets/seals, just removes years of sludge, very slowly as you use it. Had an massey harris 33 that the oil actually clean the bottom of the oil pan up, exposing many tiny pin holes that had formed due to trapped water condensation over the years. Took a abundant coating of epoxy(jb weld) to seal up all the 30 fine holes.

I agree with Jim. I live in Ontario Canada near London, and when we rebuilt our Farmall BN Put full synthetic in first off. Starts well even in Winter cold conditions. WE use the synthetic in all our engines; lawn tractor with a Kholer 14 hp, snow blower with a Brigs 10 Kholer Generator and all our autos.
In the none Auto engines change once a year due to the amount run. Best choice we ever made for oil.

As an old used tractor dealer heres what I say FWIW, same as others, nothing lol

1) Use of expensive syn oil in an old tractor PROBALY WONT HURT and will work just fine.
2) Use in an old tractor IT PROB WONT HELP OR MAKE MUCH IF ANY DIFFERENCE

In alllllllll my modern vehicles Im a firm believer in syn oil but I prob wouldnt pay extra for it in an old tractor BUT THATS JUST ME To each their own oil choices

My cadillac is a 6 cylinder and sometimes 4 cylinder. Synthetic oil is critical and so is tier 4 fuel. Synthetic oil is changed every 6k. Conventional oil was changed every 3k when I bought a new 2005 buick and 2007 GMC truck.

It's your money. I use the cheapest oil in my old tractors and old lawn mowers.
I will use what Kubota recommends for my new tractor.
Kubota will service the tractor until it is 5 years old, the power train warranty is 5 years.

I think today's cheap oil is better than the oil 50 years ago.

This ranks right up there with electrical questions as a popular topic! Lots of opinions, right, wrong, neutral.

Mine is: run what you're comfortable with, as long is it isn't some 1950s cans you've been hoarding.

My choice is Mobil 1 multi-vis, because it has a very good reputation and Wallyworld sells it at a reasonable price.

First oil into an old engine that's new to me, or the start up of an overhaul/rebuild is a cheaper single weight that gets changed in less than 10 hours. That's just to remove any debris that may be loose in the engine. I just can't get my shop hospital clean so there may be some dust etc in there.

The reason for synthetic in my case is resistance to heat breakdown and ease of cranking when cold.

Ken .... you mention that you first use 'cheaper single-weight' ..... I don't remember when I last saw any single weight conventional oil cheaper than multi-grade. Up here it's not only harder to find but considerably more expensive.
