how to time John Deere AR tractor with distributor

Roll the engine to match the timeing marks on the flywheel and houseing. You may meed to remove the flywheel cover.
Pop the cap and look at the position of the rotor and cap. If 180 out.roll it over one turn.Adjust by turning the distrubutor. That is called 'static' timeing.

To add, if you did not know the spark occurs just as the points open. This will be shown by the use of a test light. Hopefully someone will come along to give you a bit more of a detailed process. Are you sure the tractor does not have a magneto? The process is quite a bit different on those.

Yes it has a Delco distributor. The yr 53 was last yr Deere produced styled AR. The 53 had some of new changes that were put on its replacement the 60, the numbered sires that replaced A,B G and AR.
There is a small door on top of flywheel cover to observe the teeth of flywheel. Wonder if this is for use of timing lite?
Thanks for info.

Richard; if your AR has that round window on top of the flywheel cover, then you can use a power-timing light to set your timing correct. For your AR, I have the timing at 25 degrees at 1300 RPMs.. Points .022 and plugs .030 plus+...

We had a 1950 AR and that little hole was where the starter control rod went thru same as all the late styled A & B tractors were. The starter button was on top of that rod. The place to check timing is a cover on side of flywheel cover that just pops out, if remeber correctly about 10 inches in diameter. Sounds like your tractor was rewired with a non orignal type of starte switch. Should be gust press that button on top of the rod with your hand to start. That flywheel cover is the same as the late styled A tractor. And center cover fits the late B tractor as well. Just use a screwdriver to pop that flywheel cover out.
