930 Case Tractor

I have power steering problems with a 930 Case tractor.
I'm on my 3rd pump and they all do the same thing.
It is extremely hard to turn with or without a load on the FEL.
the belt squeals constantly. It slows the fan down and the tractor will heat up if I'm baling or any heavy work.
I've taken the filter out, but it doesn't change anything.
Anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem?
Would a power steering pump from a newer model help?

It's not the pump.

Something is blocking the flow.

Normally the pump sends oil free flowing through the system until there is a
demand (turning the wheel) for pressure.

Could be a kinked pressure line, internally collapsed line, or a bad
directional valve. If the original pump shed metal fragments there could be
blocked passages or the valve jammed.

If this is an Orbitrol system there is likely a problem in the Orbitrol. If
you take it apart be extremely observant how it comes apart. It will go back
many ways but must be exactly right to work. Make reference marks, take
pictures.

Those case have power assist steering, nit
true power steering. They will not steer
when stopped with any extra weight on the
front like a loader. It should turn pretty
good while moving, but if your trying to
steer while sitting it wont work.

The belts squealing tells me the pump and
system are working properly. Make sure you
have good quality belts and that they are
tight. The pulleys on the water pump could
be getting worn out, that does happen. You
can try to find some better than yours at a
salvage yard.

You can also check the bearings in the
spindles. There are needle bearings in the
knees and thrust bearings on the bottom. If
those are bad it will make things worse.

Gkrob Get a new quality belt as yours is worn out. Also check the pulleys for the sides being worn out.

As Jon stated below may not be the pump.
To rule spindle bearings out, jack front
end up off the ground and disengage the
steering.Should be able to turn front end
by hand with no binding. Then start tractor
and should be able to spin steering wheel
full right and left with one finger. If not
then you have steering sector problems.

I second this reply. Worn pullys have more of a U shape than the V shape they were designed to have. It's going to be a pain to change
them, but it maybe your only choice.

Jon, what about adjusting the nut on the steering gear up in front of the radiator? Isn't that shaft supposed to slide back and forth a bit to activate the steering assist?

Thought you said something about this on the Case power steering systems a while back.

Maybe I'm completely wrong though too.

That is an adjustment, but unless someone has messed with it it shouldn't need any adjusting

If you do as you say ir won't tell him if the thrust bearing on the bottom is good as there will be no weight on it. And as I said below, they won't turn when sitting still with a loader on them anyway
So he needs to tell us what he is expecting and just ow bad it is. If he's expecting it to turn like some other brands, that's just not going to happen no matter what.
