Three point down pressure

(quoted from post at 18:43:18 02/06/22) No.Down pressure will get you in trouble..

It would be good to have down pressure using a rear mount snow blower. I used to have it on the home built hitch on the Cockshutt 40 but this JD 2140 has zero down pressure. Hard enough to keep it down on the ground. Was riding up over rock hard snow drifts today although to be fair, it was so hard I ended up using the front end loader bucket to break up the drifts first.

Have you ever tried a hydraulic top link? I use one with my snow blower, angles the blower up or down. Can leave a little snow later, or scape the loose gravel, or
scratch down into the frozen stuff depending on a couple inches of angle.

No I don't have enough hydraulic circuits for that with the front end loader on. I can usually get by ok with it as is but its a learning process.

Deere makes a new tractor with hydraulic down pressure.
When used properly down pressure is a great added feature.
When used improperly it can make you loose traction as it takes weight off the rear wheels.
The good thing about the new Deere setup is you can turn the down pressure on or off.
Down pressure I have used on other older tractors you could not turn the down pressure off.

Least thats what the book says and what Ive heard here. Adjustment is on the top of the valve body.

Some of the Belarus models had down pressure. There was a separate control that you pulled to push down. Worked great on a post hole digger. Never tried it for anything else.

Now that I think about it that statement was wrong.
I used an 80's something Belarus with down pressure.
The lever for the 3 point was like a dozer.
Moving the lever one way would lift the 3 point.
Moving the lever the other way would power down the 3 point.
Pulling the lever all the way past the detent would lock it in float turning off the power down.

The new Deere has a dash switch that turns the power down on and off.
With the switch one way the tractor works like a normal tractor.
With the switch the other way it has power up and power down.

Don't know of any new tractors with it. I have it on a Farmall C with a after market Saginaw 3 point on it. It has a pin you can take out and run it without the down pressure. The only time I use the down pressure is for a post hole digger. Doesn't work very good for anything else that I use.

My son has a John Deere post hole digger that has a.cylindet on top. Makes it have down pressure.

No. It counteracts the weight of the tractor in trying to obtain traction on the rears....which do most of the driving. You put weights on the implement to get down pressure.
