Big Ole Amphibian

Any idea why they'd put this thing in the water? I thought maybe to launch boats after repair but it doesn't look suitable for that. I'm guessing by the looks of it that it likes a healthy dose of fuel any time it moves. This is from my travels in Iceland. Gerrit

It's a LARC-XV, used by the military to
haul cargo to a beachhead etc. LARC stands
for Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo

LARC-XV, introduced in 1960, is an
aluminium hulled amphibious cargo vehicle.
It measures 45 by 15 feet and is powered
by 2-300 hp engines. About 100 were made
with a small batch sent to Germany.

The US Navy had a base in Iceland for many years, you sometimes see these old military relics sitting around. Part of the old base has a radar installation still operating and the barracks were converted to apartments for rent. The location is high on a hill and they get constant wind there. This thing likely belonged to the Navy. Thanks for the information. Gerrit

I thought you were talking about this guy

He stands on the shore of Lake Agnes, but I dont think
he ever put a toe in the water.

Believe it or not the LARCs belonged to
the Army.

In an unrelated note I've stopped by
Iceland numerous times (Keflavic). C-130s
stopped there when going across the pond.
I know what you mean about the wind - once
it was so windy takeoff had to be delayed
for a day.

(quoted from post at 01:34:14 01/09/22) Could you get that on carry-on or would you have to check it in? Just asking.

Gas it up and throw some extra cans in the back. Aim it towards North America. Probably plenty room for your luggage. Gerrit

Even for many Icelanders that location is too windy. Rental car companies here go to great lengths to warn about opening car doors in extreme winds. A good gust will bend the hinges back, cause a lot of damage. Gerrit
