Fuel tank outlet thread sealant

So, on a fuel tank (diesel) the outlet threads that the tank shut off valve threads into what do y'all use to seal the threads? Regular teflon thread tape? Some sort of liquid sealer?

I have never used any thing. That fitting should be pipe tread so you tighten it up to the point there is no leaks. If it leaks then you have a tread problem

Well maybe u dont, but it is standard practice on pipe threads to seal them. They always weep with dry threads. Even natural gas line threads are sealed outside of homes.

I have done it both ways. Back when you could get good parts and pipe fittings with accurate threads you didn't really need anything. Now with poor product and poor quality threads you probably will need something. Tape goop or what ever you choose. Fuel tanks are not some scientific thing to seal fittings on. Pretty much anything that you would use on an engine gasket will seal the threads. I have used several things tape, permatex, liquid teflon, rector seal, you choose.

What I use..... Standard practice in the heating trade around here.

Somewhere, probably this site, I saw about Gasoila. Supposed to be resistant to fuel. I tried it on my IH gas tank fittings and it seemed to clear up what had been a constant leak problem. Teflon would work for a while, but not very long. Its been at least a year and so far no leaks.

Several products have been listed, all will work.

But the most important thing to check in this global trade world, is to KNOW what thread it is!

Easy to assume it's NPT when it can easily be BPT! They will usually screw together, but will leak, and once tightened, the threads of both pieces are forever damaged!

Well, I have several of these products here at the house. My fuel outlet has been weeping for awhile and while I know how to seal threads, seems that alot of products don't work as well with chemicals like gas or diesel. Thanks for the responses

Permatex form-a-gasket number 3

But be careful not to tighten too much.

Typically, many fuel tank npt outlets are merely an area of metal a little thicker than the tank.
Over torquing can split the female port, then your screwed.

Many times when I screw the sediment bowl or shutoff valve back into the tank the fitting does not get tight enough to dry seal when I reach that spot where the fuel line lines up perfect. One more turn will twist the fitting off. This is where thread tape and thread dope come into play.
