Scenes from picking

We have been stretched out barning baccer and picking corn when we had time and enough help to run a picking crew. Tomorrow we will get the last barn put in for the year. The church had they're BBQ and chicken plates Saturday. We fed everyone for putting up with us. Lol. Still not quite sure which one is going to be the best, the BBQ or finishing up putting in. Still have a ways to go before finishing up corn picking. Here's a few pictures from today.

I'm in eastern NC. The corn crop on what we've picked so far has been a bit different than usual. With all the mid season rain we had, the lighter the soil type is, the better the yield. The black land is water hurt, pretty bad in places, which is throwing the yield off there.

I ran through the Greenville, NC area last week and witnessed many fields of tobacco and corn that were totally wasted. I wondered what happened to make them fail so badly. Now I know. Glad your crop turned out though.

Blue Mold used to be the killer. Once you find it in a field, you may be too late to save it. In WNC, patches are so small and usually on steep slopes that water won't stand too bad. But, a lot of it got washed with Fred and Ida.

I'm about 40-45 minutes south of Greenville. Yeah this drought, wet, drought and excessive heat cycle this year has been rough on stuff. Looks like everyone will make most of a crop, but it sure won't be one to remember as a blue ribbon winner tho .

crsutton81 i am close to Winston Salem did you know the farmer that was killed a couple years ago he grew about a thousand acres 0f tobacco his wife was from my area he lived north of Rocky Mount last i heard no one had been charged.

greetings from west Central Mo, nice pics, just starting to try some corn
here today, chance of rain coming Tues night.
Yes, the dry, then heat, then too wet again really put the hammer on.
some corn ears are down close to your shins from the heat killing the
stalk, DK corn.
will post some pics and results later.
Stay positive and Stay Safe out there! GG

I'm familiar with the farmer that was mysteriously shot. He lived in the Kenly area. He seemed to be a good fellow. We bought a tobacco barn from him and throughout the entire transaction, he treated us good. Not sure if this is the same person you're talking about, but hated to hear about his death. To my knowledge, no one has been caught in his murder.

My family is from your area. Mom grew up on a farm near Warsaw and dad near Wallace. Both raised hogs and tobacco mainly. My grandfather had the first bulk curing barn in Pender county in 1969. I still have the clipping from Pender chronicle. My dad worked on developing it at State. My grandma sold her farm in the 80s to Murphy bros. My uncle still has the farm near Wallace but leases it out.

My grandmother retired as an English teacher from James Kenan HS about 30 years ago. I've got a lot of family in the same area also.

I know that HS name. My cousins probably went there. My aunt taught in Warsaw and probably retired about the same time as your grandmother. She passed away in 2016. Martha Whitfield was her name. The farm is near Veach's mill.
