JX 65 Tach stops working

Hi,
I have a 2003 JX 65 where the tach works when I start the tractor and run it at low RPMs. Shortly after that the tach quits operating. It seems to operate longer at lower RPMs, but if you run say at PTO speed for 5-10 minutes the tach stops working. Any info you can provide as to how to troubleshoot would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

John B

That could be possible, but the tach lights seem to work fine. From what I can tell the tach is mechanical because it has a cable from then engine to the tach. All connections are tight. Do the ends wear (get rounded or?. could the connection in the tach itself be rounded out? No issue buying a new tach cable, just don't want to start replacing parts at random.

Thanks for your response.

I'm surprised that has a mechanical tach. Just about everything now is electronic.

Try this, take the cable loose from the back of the tach. Feel the end of the drive cable, be sure it is smooth to the touch, no burs. Try to twist it with your fingers, you should not be able to. Start the engine, try to stop it with your fingers, you should not be able to.

If you can stop it or it 'skips' and restarts, chances are the drive gear at the engine is stripped. It could be a bad end on the cable. Just have to track down the problem, should be fairly obvious once you get into it.

It is rare for a mechanical tach to quit reading. They can seize, which will twist the cable off, an obvious and one time failure. The brass driven piece on the back where the cable goes in should turn effortlessly and smoothly, should see the needle move when spinning it by hand. If the cable checks good, and if you can get to it, or take the tach out, rig up a drill motor to spin it and see what it does.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the troubleshooting instructions. The tractor is 180 miles from me, but I'll follow through on your suggestions and figure it out next time I'm out there.

Thanks again,

Regards,

John B
