Silage cutter for small farm

What pull type John Deere silage cutter is the best value and the best reliability. I am not familiar with their numbers. New enough to get parts for it. Needs to have 2 row 30 inch capability and I only cut 20 acres a year.

Bought a new JD 38 in 1969 to replace a Gehl as the sorghum we were cutting was too tall and dense for the Gehl to handle. That 38 just ate it up. We did some custom cutting and often had sorghum that was down and twisted. That Deere would walk thru it with minimal problems. Like was stated, may be hard to find a 38 or 3800 in decent condition anymore due to age.

A good 3940 or a 3950 would be about perfect for your needs. Plenty of parts to be had as well. If you only grow average corn a good 35,38 or 3800 would also work. There are still some good 35 and 38's here in WI that only had a one row head and used on small farms. The main buyers for them are from Mexico. I have a 3940 and a 35 along with several older machines. Tom
