When to replace PTO shaft -Baler

When do you guys consider a PTO shaft worn out and ready
for replacement? I have a NH 273 square baler that is due for
some bushings in the front driveline. The driveshaft also has
about 1/8 of slop (pretty noticeable) at half extension. This is
currently a square bar type shaft and is fairly noisy in turns. Is
it it time for replacement of keep milking it along?

Got a NH 417. This hay season gone the front short shaft spun inside the tube while baling so was forced to replace it. This had already been changed from the rectangular original NH setup to the more generic triangular PTO tubing. If you don't want break downs do it in the off season and do the universal joints and replace the guards. I am good at spending your money, just depends on how reliable you want your baler? I went to replace the NH rectangular shaft on a 1038 stackliner and couldn't get the rectangular tubing so it got changed to the triangular type.

I do have the U Joints timed correctly. How did you go about converting it to the triangular tubing? I believe I'm limited to the PTO series of the rear yoke attached to the baler.

Ive found it hard to wear out an original pto shaft unless you physically harm it. The knuckles need new crosses every now and then that is where the looseness seems to be?

Those triangle ones I have wore down, but the old square ones last and last.

The 1/8" play puts the shaft out of balance. An out of balance shaft puts more stress on the yokes and supporting shaft bearings. at 1/8" sideways play the shaft has 1/4" slop as it spins. At 540 or less RPM's the out of balance won't cause wear as fast as it would on a 1000 RPM shaft. You should be good to go for awhile depending how good the yokes are but maybe you should keep an eye out for a replacement shaft to have handy.

I think this is probably the best explanation for what's going on. I'll throw a new shaft on as well with
these bushings to take up the slop.
