The company I worked for 45 years ago use to tell me to take the shaft out of a gear box with the worn seal groove and chuck in a lathe and cut a deeper groove. Then brase it up and turn it back down in a pinch. Brass is still softer than steel. I don't know how long it lasted as it went out the door.
