Starter fluid question?

Folks this is on a 1964 Ford 2000 gas tractor. Recently I could not get it started until I sprayed starter fluid into the carb and it started/ ran fine. My question is why/what would cause issue of tractor not starting without starter fluid?

Could be a number of things. Lack of pulling a good vacuum so gas is not being pulled into the engine. Carb problem. My 841S will do that some times but it is only used to move my hay bales so it is not run much any more

Choke plate may not be fully closing when the choke is applied.
Old gasoline may not be volatile enought to start, but will run.

i would look into the choke first thing to make sure its closing. then do a compression check. some pretty wore out engines still start good
as long as the choke works.

I find it easier to give my lawnmowers a
shot of starting fluid after they have
sat for a week or so.

Why does starter fluid put people to
sleep and wake up engines?.

I also fine if an engine hasn't been run for a while and isn't starting a shot of either will get it running. I think it is to do with the gas we get now isn't what it
used to be and older engines were not designed to run on the stuff.

perryjosh64,

You have a fuel issue. Check the usual
things, choke is one.restricted fuel filter?

But there is a cheaper and safer way (for
the engine), to get a fuel starved engine
to kick over.

A water bottle with a hole on the cap is
one,

Guido.

Folks I appreciate all the advice and will start the tinkering process starting with the carb/choke check. Should have included info of I used tractor about week prior spraying a pasture using a diaphragm pump that pulled power from the tractor battery (dont know if that plays a part or not?). As far as gas I only use non-ethanol gas treated w/ K100 gas treatment and gas should be about 1-2 months old (how good the source is Have no idea). Plugs were changed this year.

Guido- I assume thats gas in water bottle? Sorry for dumb dumb question but just checking. My mechanic skills come from Google searches, YouTube videos and trail & error acts (lots of errors)!

I use a primer bottle, with a little tube in it, it allows me to meter fuel in. I have run engines with it that didn't have the carburetor in
place, works great for troubleshooting. I always use 40-1 mixed gas, a little oil makes them start better too.

What fuel are you using, I had same concern with my 52 8N
I switched from Ethanol blended to Non Ethanol 93 and my problem went away
what a difference starts good and I notice more power when mowing.

Theoretically and engine should start better on the lower octane fuel, are you sure you weren't using E-85? Premium has anti-knock additives that make it harder to light.

only thing that changes after it starts the vacuum is higher on your carb. suspect some blockage some where. probably dirty needle.

If an engine won't initially start without using starting fluid but starts and runs OK once you give it a shot of ether, it probably didn't have enough compression to begin with. This is often due to one or more stuck valves, or it could be the rings aren't sealing. Once it fires up on ether, the valves get shook loose and the rings get enough oil to seal.

(quoted from post at 06:28:33 06/19/21) If an engine won't initially start without using starting fluid but starts and runs OK once you give it a shot of ether, it probably didn't have enough compression to begin with. Another scenario is starting fluid was utilized incorrectly by spraying a lot more than needed to get engine to start running therefore top piston rings get broken lowering compression causing what is termed as "starting fluid addiction"!!
