Leaking water temp sensor, help please

I installed a new water temp gauge and the temp sender is dripping. I know there is an issue with some temp sensors being too long , causing the mounting nut not to tighten down, this is not the case. The temp sensor is not bottoming out on the back side.

I have tightened down on the nut as much as I can, but it still leaks.
Can I use a sealer or silicon around the sender to help seal it?
 
Yes you can use sealer.

I would try wrapping the sealing area with a heavy application of teflon tape.

Not the threads, but where the flange seats.
 
I worked where we built temp senders for Ford back in the 70s. Every one we made went through a tape machine that wrapped the threads with teflon
tape before it was shipped out to be installed in the engine.
 


Mating surfaces and threads need to be clean. If it is a four cylinder Ford the mating surface is the underside of the flange of the bulb so the surface under that needs to be clean in order for it to be able to seal. Also, in order for the retaining nut to apply adequate pressure on the bulb, the threads in the hole need to be clean. No sealer should be necessary unless the sealing surface is deteriorated.

Sorry about that. It's a 50 to 52 Ferguson TO30. Gas 4 CYL. The sender mounts in the neck of the water inlet above the T Stat.

Rick,
Try posting this down on the Harry Ferguson Discussion Forum below. I seem to remember some having issues with this same thing and you might get some info there from someone who doesn't monitor this forum closely.
