Welding Manifold

I bought a different motor for my Oliver 88 and the carburetor mount is broken off. I got another manifold but I think I will try to weld this one back up just to see if I can.

That should be a good candidate for repair.

Obviously that was caused by some unusual event, not something that failed under normal use.

When a casting fails as a result of normal use, or is burned out, as in an exhaust manifold, those are usually not repairable.

Exhaust manifolds are cast from a very brittle, low grade of iron. They are very hard to weld without cracking.
As said below, braze it. That crap is even hard to braze because it's full of impurities but brazing will give you a much better chance of a long lasting repair.

There are some good suggestions here , heat both pieces to a cherry red ,then weld with a rod for cast. Also, my neighbour used to weld cast for people and he had a couple of pails of dry sand. When he finished welding he covered the piece with sand. This held the heat in and the piece cooled slowly and less chance of it cracking

The allow in a manifold us usually too cheap to electric weld. There is so much impurities in it the metal it tends to burn instead of weld. It will braze though is someone knows what they are doing. It is as important to slowly cool the weld after you are done as it is to weld it. Still I would be looking for a replacement even if it seems to work.

had a 1850 Oliver with a cracked one,, someone had tried to weld it like said just cracked again,, so I thought on it,, I took and started the tractor ran it at full throttle for about 5 min,, shut it off and of course had the alt un plugged to prevent frying it,, I had the crack vee'ed out and clean, welded it up with a stick welder, then started the engine again and ran at full throttle for anther few min,, let it idle for 5 min, zero cracking been that way for 25 years now still holding, I learned 40 plus years ago how to weld cast and keep it from breaking

Braze it. I have one that had a hole in it and brazed a steel patch over it 20 years ago and still going.
