Trail camera power

My Stealth trail camera (isolated spot away from power) is eating up the 8 AA batteries too fast for my liking, whether alkaline or rechargeable. The 8 are 1.5v each, making 12v. Can I hook up a 12v tractor battery and take out the 8 AA's? Could I leave in the rechargeable batteries with the acid battery hooked up?

Simple answer, yes you can hook up a 12 volt tractor battery to your Stealth camera. It should have port for an external battery on the bottom behind a rubber tab. It takes a round connector. Once you have that battery hooked up, remove the AA batteries as they eventually will leak and destroy the camera. I have proof.

Some of the wildlife cameras I have now do not have the external battery port so I opened them and soldered in a 2 wire cable with alligator clips for an external battery. The newer cameras run quite a while on AA batteries so I bought a holder for C cells. Cheap and last quite a while and if they leak it will only destroy the battery holder.

If your taking videos not just still pictures it will drain the
batteries faster. I can set mine to take pictures at longer intervuls
which also helps. I set mine to take a picture every 30 seconds not
continually

Trail cameras are like us. All different . I use external batteries on all
five of mine. One uses six volts only, others are 12 volt. Some require you
still have the internal batteries in them and others do not.

Some require unhooking the external battery power lead to open cover of
camera and some do not. I use rechargeable AA batteries in most along with
the external batteries.

One I use lithium batteries because it is out all year long and alkaline
don't like cold temp's even with aux batteries.

One camera is super sensitive to temperatures. When cold you have to set it
to low sensitivity and when hot out set to high. Any little temp increase in
cold temps it will take pictures constantaly, like 4000 in one night of
nothing. Some are easy to set up and others are a pain. All different.

We have both Stealth and Bushnell, I'm not sure what the operating voltage is on the Stealth, but the Bushnell is 6 volt. It has 8 AA
batteries, but it is 2 6 volt circuits. The reason being you can change the bottom 4, and then the top 4, and never loose power to the
camera, so you don't loose your settings. They do sell 6 volt rechargeable batteries and solar panels to operate them with.
