Massy 1100/1130 power?

I watched a sales movie for the introduction of the MF 1100 and 1130 tractors. They showed the 1130 as 120 HP pulling a 8 bottom plow. Anyone ever see one do that? Seems like 8 bottoms is one big plow. I did see them pulling some big disks also. Today to pull 8 bottoms it takes 250HP or more. Anyone run a 1130 when new? They were never very popular around here. I did like the looks of this tractor. Did they have short comings? I know the 354 Perkins was a home run, but what about the rest of the tractor?? Al

There were a few here. The guys seemed well satisfied with them. The 354 was an awsome engine,A "home run". But I always thought it didnt have the low end torque of the 400+ cI engines of their competitors.I am impressed by the 318 of the 1080/1085.Not impressed by the 6 speed MultiPower, rather have the 8 speed trans.Hydralics dont seem to be as reliable as other makes. They seem more complicated. But,all in all, they seem to be good tractors. The 100 didnt have quite enough power to pull a 4 bottom rollover in our heavier soils.,the 1130 had no issues there.

a friend of my dads , bought a 1130 new, he pulled 6-16s,
and thaat was a decent match in my areas, we have lighter soils,
on heavy ground that might be to much,
unless someone turns up the fuel pump!

Plow size depends on soil type AND how fast you want to plow. Dad pulled 6-16 MF 880 plow with his MF 1100 he bought new from the MF dealer I worked for years ago. I had an 880 7-16 on land plow I pulled with an MF 1105 8 speed using third gear. Dealer also had one 1130 owner that was using an eight row twenty inch chisel planter in the 70s. The hydraulic system is closed center similar to JD also. Most were sold with the 12 speed MP transmission option, with six speed standard. the eight speed option started with the 05 series. Far as plow size goes, there were no 8 bottom MF plows in my area, and I remember plowing speed was slower when I was a kid too. Going from a 2-16 to 3-16 plow is a 50% increase, 6-16 to 7-16 is about 17% increase when you compare plow size that way.

My uncle bought an 1135 and a case 1270 new as a pair from the same dealer and had them set on the dyno at the same hp what ever that was. They both pulled 8-16s plows. The Massey had a hard time because it got so hot it would burn oil. Had the power, just got so hot it would burn a lot of oil. They figured the oil spray on the sleeves was burning off before the rings could wipe it off. That's what they said anyway. They just used the case for the tillage and the Massey on the lighter work and got along fine then. Wasn't long before the upgraded to four wheel drive.

I have run a 6-16 880 on an 1105 and it did ok. Would have been fine on stubble ground, but was plowing red clover cover crop which was a bit challenging. Needed to be able to sink the plow as fast as possible at slow speed, then get moving to keep the plow from plugging. Didn’t have quite enough power to do that. In those conditions, the 4-16 full mount plow was a better match, especially with the small fields I had.

The 2805 just played with the 6-16 though.

The dairy farm next to our farm has 3 Massey 1100 ‘s, a Massey 1135 and a Massey 3545 4wd. They plow with an 1100 pulling 5x16 semi mounted plow. In the ground we have it’s really too much plow for the tractor . A 4 bottom would be a better match for it here.

It probably could pull it in sandy soil like where they grow potatoes ,but not in Rantoul Ill,or Fargo N.D. in the river bottom1

In my neighborhood of average plowing soil a 1100 was a 5 bottom tractor and a 1130 was a 6 bottom tractor..Go 6 miles north and you'd have to take one bottom away from each one.

Dad bought one new ( diesel ) in 1969 or 1970. It was one of the biggest tractors in our area. It had a motor problem and went back to the dealer early. We had a loaner 1150. After the 1130 came back , no more trouble. It easily pulled the big six bottom plow it came with. We had a big winged disc also. And a large Kraus chisel plow. Dad farmed 570 acres with it , a JD 4020D and a few smaller tractors. The three point was kind of a hassle to changeover. The draw bar support assembly swings under the tractor and locks forward and out of the way. Dad was 5 ft tall. He had to crawl under there on his back , and kick the thing forward with both feet. We liked it as our big tillage tractor and to move bales in mud and snow. Was a sharp looking tractor.

As I told before, I was very impressed with the features of them Tractors.
Only shortcoming I see is top link draft sensing. Massey went to the lower links sensing on the 85 to super90. Going back to upper links on tractor twice as powerful was fairly idiotic. Pressure control was impressive.

All new Tractors of today have same external three point hitch cylinder as 1100.

Tilt telescope steering, multi power, hydraulic seat, side console, pump disengaged from seat was unheard of in 1964.

The early 1130 had a bull gear with two square keys holding it in the housing, after the early failures they went to four keys and that fixed the weak differentials. Neighbor Had a 1130 and pulled a 8-16(88 MF plow).if I remember right the 880 was an onland hitch. He thought it was a little underpowered, and he blocked the return line on the pump. No one ever thought that tractor was underpowered after that. His fence line neighbor bought Green and nothing could ever be as good as his 4020. Son Larry gets out in the field next to Sam, and the MF is pulling twice as big a plow and going twice as fast. That was after the M&W blower kit on the 4020. We had one 1100 on the dyno,98 hp,after the factory turbo installation(they went to the parts book for the new 1105, and order every nut and bolt, manifold everything from MF.) we bolted everything on and they took it down to the dyno and it came up to 98hp. They did the dyno on a Saturday when the shop was closed. He was made as a hen Monday morning. We broke the seal on the pump and had it up to 135,till moved it down to 115 hp, latter I heard he had it set up to 120 hp. It helps when your uncle happenes to own the MF Dealership.

The 1100 and 1105 both had 7.5 MM injection pump plungers, the 1130 and 1135 had 10 MM plungers. The mildly turbocharged 1105 barely made 100 HP, so an injection pump with larger plungers would be needed. My 1105 had the compressor side of turbo changed, and along with the 9 MM pump head I installed I had it set at 130 HP with NO smoke, unlike the black smoke 1105 was known for. Best not to get too crazy with the 1100/1105 as they had lighter rear end parts than the 1130/1135 used.
