Sorry folks. I was wrong to say the grain binder produced "shocks"! It was a "shock" to me when I realized I misspoke! Actually our binder made bundles (as others have said) and we stacked them into shocks.

Just to clear up the confusion and hope I haven't added confusion.
 
In NZ a binder made sheaves and they were put into stooks (eight to 10 sheaves) to ripen and dry before being either stacked or taken to the threshing machine (or tin mill (the US made equivalents))
 
Ah yes, some kinda memory! Needed a new pair of soft leather gloves for making shocks (stooks?) every year. Some years a lot of grass in the butt of sheaves, some places a lot of dried Canadian Thistles. I am glad I left the farm many years ago. Last did that job in 1956. Leo
