Farmall F20 Electric Start

I am thinking about switching my 1937 Farmall F20 over to electric start. I have a couple questions to see if this is something I could possibly tackle this winter.

1. What parts do I need to buy to get the electric start to work?

2. Where would I buy the parts?

i have never saw one with a starter nor a w-30 and people say they are out there. it would be on the last year of production tractors if
there is such a thing for 1940 so i guess happy hunting.

I have not seen one on a tractor from the factory. All I have heard if you have to buy parts from various places and put them all together. I am not necessarily looking forward to that but if it's safer and makes it so the tractor will start easier I am up for the challenge.

does the flywheel have a ring gear? is there a starter mount on engine? i would say its much easier to keep the tractor properly tuned up and
use arm strong starter. i got a 1939 WD40 with a 461 cu. in. engine that i hand start 3 pulls on the crank and she is running. it is all you
want to pull on the crank. not like those little engines with 283 cubes.

If I remember correctly, my uncle had a '39 with electric start and a steering wheel like those of later H's and M's.

They would need the bellhousing place for a starter wouldn't they? And a place for the battery. Leo

40 or so years ago friend bought a F20 at auction, it had what looked like factory starter with bell hsg it bolted to. Had belly pump and a road gear, Think was a Behlen.

After market starters were available through Sears, Wards and probably some other sources. My neighbor had a late F20 that had a starter. We used that tractor to spray corn at lay by time. I drove it at that time but that was 50 years ago. That F20 is still in a shed a few miles away and a few years ago I looked at it to see what kind of a starter arrangement it had. The starter was bolted to the front of the bell housing tucked up under the left frame rail so there must be a ring gear on the flywheel. I might end up owning that tractor some day if I can sneak it past Marilyn.

Few years ago Farm Show Magazine had an article about starter kit. What I can't remember is was it for F12,14 or 20.

I looked for a kit in a 1945 Wards catalog and did not find a kit. I did find this listing of starters and prices. It's interesting.

You might need to enlarge it a bit.

The starter I was involved with 50 years ago had a push button to activate a solenoid that sent power to the starter. It was a jury rigged affair with wires dangling around. This tractor had a generator and lights, all jury rigged. When I hit the starter button it made a normal starter engaging a ring gear type noise so there must have been a ring gear fitted to the flywheel somehow.

Binderson Helped a friend of mine put one on a F20 coupla years ago. He found a kit with included bell housing and flywheel. Starter mounts under left frame rail. I don't know who made it or where he got it. Helped him change flywheel and bell housing and hone it out and put the piston head rods and and oil pan on. Tried calling him but no answer. He got sick and had some more problems so we never finished it. Saw him last month and getting better and he said when cools of try and get it running. Will try and go by there some time and take some pictures if you want. Lynn

Binderson My friend called and said he bought a F20 with the kit on it. Didn't have any brand name on it. I found coupla things about the electric start. Lynn

I have a Regular with a Heisler starter kit, a Heisler generator kit and a Heisler overdrive that I would like to sell. I believe all this would work on a F20.
