Thought that didn't look right

I drained the oil in my JD. I grabbed a gallon container that had the oil I use. It didn't look right. I keep hydraulic oil in that gallon container, to keep in my truck, with a bunch of other stuff I never use. So I put about a qt of hydraulic oil in my motor, just one quart is in the pan. Getting late I just came home. Should I drain it out? I was thinking I will, or will it make any difference? Any thoughts. At least I didn't put 10 gal of gasoline in my diesel tank like I did a few years ago. Now I have a rebuilt pump out of that screw up. I think someone said: Getting old sucks. Stan

A quart of hydraulic oil will hurt nothing in your tractor, just add the remainder of the regular engine oil you use. The hydraulic oil has anti-foam agents, is formulated for high pressure use and has great film strength. In short many of the same properties found in modern engine oil.

Just watch it for a day or two someone accidentally put a gallon in a Steiger one time and it burned it pretty fast

If you had added a quart to an almost-full motor, I'd say leave it in, since it's not worth the cost of dumping six quarts of oil. But since you only have one quart in the pan, you might as well drain it out since you're only out one quart of hydraulic oil.

You will be OK. A local Allis dealer once told me a farmers hired man put a whole 55 gallon drum of hydraulic oil through several tractor engines on his farm. The hired man was in charge of changing engine oil and he thought this drum of hydraulic oil was engine oil so he used it. The dealer said the farmer never did bring his tractors in for engine overhauls. I dont know if these tractors were used for heavy pulling or yard putzing but there were no blowups that the dealer knew of.

So the one quart of hydraulic fluid is the only thing in the pan? I'd drain it out. If you had added a quart to top up the existing oil, I'd leave it in.

Back in the 70's a neighbor mistook the 303 hydraulic oil can for motor oil can at a oil change during spring tillage. The 4020 started burning oil and needed an overhaul after running hard for half a day with a full pan of 303 hydraulic oil in the engine.

If you only have one quart of hydraulic oil in the pan and no motor oil yet, I would drain the pan and start over. One quart of hydraulic oil is only what $5 or $6?

There have been thousands of engines running engine driven hydraulic pump leak into crankcase. Not to worry.
