Sad day Ford 960

About 5 hours of run time ago the
transmission started making a rattle
noise. Started out just a little noise
when you let clutch out. Then while
cutting with sickle mower on Saturday it
got to be almost all the time while pto
was engaged. Took gear shift plate off we
were able to determine the noise is
coming from the front of the
transmission. You can hear the rattle at
the end of video. I guess we gonna spit
it at some point. Took the swinging draw
bar off and put it on 640. Got hay cut.
Gotta bale it.

I guess I could run it a while
more......just no telling how long it
will last.
Tranny Noise

Running it with a bearing going out might be its death rattle. I would do as you are, and put it in the hospital. bearing parts between gears, and gears runnin in partial mesh could ruin the entire trans, making the tractor cost more to fix than it is worth. And that is sad. Jim

As previously stated . Why operate the tractor when you know it is broken . Only making the repair bill larger and the down time longer .

It's parked. Waiting for us to get time
to split it. Funny thing we bought this
tractor to restore and instead it became
our work tractor. I guess it needs some
love......

Odd thing is there was nothing loose in there. Nothing jumped out at us as wrong...... Also no metal shavings in fluid when we drained it.

Though noises are difficuilt to diagnose in a chat forum, that does not sound like a bearing.

As I stated in your earlier post on the same topic, constant mesh transmissions like your 5 speed often rattle at low engine speed and, especially, upon shutdown as the cluster gear moves back and forth due to delta velocity.

Does yours always rattle with the clutch engaged? Loaded or otherwise? PTO engaged or otherwise? Idle speed or otherwise? What is the engine idle speed? How much end play in cluster gear? End play in PTO shaft?

Make sure the noise isn't coming from the clutch, noises can 'travel' and make it seem like they are coming from somewhere they are not.A stethoscope can be
a big plus when tracking down noises in machines.

TF. We have a mechanic stethoscope. Sound is coming from the front of transmission......but could be in bell housing. Right in that area. When we turn tractor off it makes the same noise my diesel pickup does if I turn it off with clutch out. I know it's the throw out bearing in the truck. Replaced it once. Still does it.

Dean, the rattle when we turn it off sounds like my pick up if I shut it off with clutch out. i know it's the throw out bearing in truck. Replaced it once still rattles....... Now the constant noise. Only does it with pto engaged. Pto shaft has no play at all. Gets worse faster you run sickle mower. But I usually cut way under 540 rpm. When I did speed it up knock got louder and more often. Very little play in any gears in transmission. My luck I will tear it apart and replace wrong thing.

Shop rat.......when we checked it the other day it was almost 2 gallons low. Filled it with YT forum approved fluid. Lol. Would have to go look at bucket to see exactly what. Would thick gear oil help?

2 gallons, holy smokes, that's a lot. Actually, I'm just trying to learn from your experience. I just put a 3 pt mower on my 641 and next is a brush hog so I will be changing out the transmission fluid and figuring out the best to replace it with.

I wish I could help you figure out your issue, hard to do from here.

I had a grain truck that was making all kinds of noises from the transmision year ago, talk with the local repair shop before we dropped the transmision,They told me to drain the oil and put diesel in and run it a few minutes let it sit a while run it again and drain it and repeat.I put fresh oil in and cleared up the problem.Just a thought.
