How long to wear paint of baler needles

Bought a used NH 311baler. Going through everything by the manual adjusting, fixing and repairing. History of baler says it had only been used once in 9 years and that was to bale about 550 bales.
Needles look very new which is good.
Just wondering how long it takes to wear paint off of needles. So like how new are the needles really?
NH dealer said needles are $180. So how long do needles last before they are considered worn out. 50,000 bales a 100,000 bales.

Needles are practically friction free. Baler plunger holds hay away from needles during needle cycle. Paint should last a very long time if not exposed to weather.

I used to bale 120-150K of small squares a year,, we never did wear out a needle other than like said below the twine will cut a grove in them and we ran the same 320 NH for 9 years it was still working fine but we changed over to round bales , we brazed them back to spec when they got 3/8" wear,

My JD 336 balers are from the late 70’s as far as I can tell. I have had them at least 15 years, closer to 20 x 3 k bales a year. Needles still have paint.

RayP is right. Plungerhead holds hay in compression as needles bring twine to knotters on tie cycle. It's not like the needle in a sewing machine or bag closer.

If the needles are new it is very likely that the baler got out of time at some point and the plunger creamed the original needles, or the needles suffered some similar violent fate. There's supposed to be a stop that comes up when the needles are out that's designed to break the shear pin and stop the plunger, but those are not 100%.

Got a MF baler, about 1969, no paint missing from needles and it's bales thousands of bales.

Just welded the grooves in the eyes in :)

pending type of baler, pushing the needles through the packed hay up to the knotter, I would suspect the paint would NOT last too long. I only looked... after mine broke and yes, there was no paint on the needles.. how does the hay chute look? paint missing? grooves worn in?

Bill, the needles push the twine up in front of the hay. The next compression stroke of the plunger-head presses hay up against the twine that was just put there.

What is your opinion of the NH 320 compared to other models of NH balers. I ran one for a neighbor 39 years ago. It had some issues and the dealer that sold it evidently didn’t have a good baler man. We took it to a different dealer with a mechanic that had 30 years of NH experience and he straightened it out in short order. With the fast plunger it would really eat the hay. Some people have said the fast plunger shook them apart. It seemed really smooth to me.

the one we ran had millions of bales through it, we replaced the bearings in the plunger and drive arm once in all those bales,, we sold lots of 283/320 balers many still int he same family today
