I think Walmart carries them.

Thats what I want. Walmart help was useless!!!!!!!!!!!!!Only reels were the right angle drive for skinny. line.

Years ago all line was braided. Then they came out with that bird nest looking for a place to happen monofilament plastic looking line.

The braided line of today is much like a piece of string but it is very slippery. In fact so slippery it requires a special knot to stay tied. If interested I can tell you the knot I use that works fairly well.

I think it's there, you just have to look for it, and know what your looking for. Although in different areas they carry items that are for that locality. We use heavier braided line for sturgeon fishing.

You're looking for Dacron line. It's still common, but not enough so to find in most stores. It's easily found online, though black isn't as common as green spot.

"What is braided line?" It's synthetic line that has high strength but small diameter. You need to use a special knot for it and if you get it hung you have to be careful not to break your rod or pole. What wally mart may not have showed you was the bulk line for trot lines that has several different weights and sizes which would be easily used for a cane pole, it's in the catfish section. Good Fishin'!

Yep dacron braided would be good.
A good tackle shop should have a selection of various strengths.
If they have any on bulk reels, a dollar or two should get you 20 feet.

I caught many panfish with cane pole and worms, crickets, grasshopers, and crawdad tails. We lived on the banks of the Tippicanoe river, always had several cane poles rigged and ready. Had a live box next to the pier so could hold fish until had enough to clean. Mom would cook fish outside on colemann stove so as not to "stink" up the house. Wish I could taste one of her fried sunfish with home made tarter. Memories, joe

pen face spin cast reels can be reversed for right or left hand use. Simply unscrew the nut on the opposite side of the crank, remove the crank, and insert it from the other side, replace nut.

Steve I don't want to hijack this post but are you saying yoyos the toy are illegal in some places? Please tell me you are not talking about the toy yoyo.

No, these things. Hang them in a tree, spring loaded reel that releases when a fish pulls on it, sets the hook, reels him in!

Untangled many a one fishing with my dad many years ago!
Yoyos

Back to yo yo' s for a bit. Illegal in many states.......Tx for sure .... But not in La if you "I D" them. ( so game warden could call you if you failed to remove fish....and let them die. They wanted you to sent them a donation (fine) and took the devices. Although I grew in SWLA, as a kid I spent many weeks at my uncles camp at Lake Bistinue in Minden La. We could not set the devices with a shiner and move to the next yo yo without the previous one tripping and catching a white perch. They do catch fish. Wingnut .

Bill it works like a hangman's knot.

A regular knot is two hitches where you make a circle; pass the tail end over the line and threw the circle.

To make this knot make one hitch.
Now take the tail end and wrap it around the line 5 or 6 times similar to a hangman's knot.
Now make a double hitch knot.

While a regular double hitch knot will comes loose using slippery braided line; This knot with the loops will pull the loops tighter and tighter around the line as you pull on it.

Never heard of them and what you are calling a trot line heard of but as far as I know they were never legal here in Ohio. I know things like those were not legal when I was last fishing 60 years ago with Dad , Dads brother and Grandpa. Grandpa died in 78 at 98, Dad in 92 at 79 and uncle sometime in the 80's. Only 2 hooks per pole, 2 poles per person and nome of the 4 hook hooks I saw advertised. And you had to stay with your pole while hook was in water.

Leroy, Maybe you can use Trotlines in Ohio.

New catfish regulations.......Channel catfish in waters under 700 surface acres....6 fish (no size limit)

They probably have changed the rules since I last read them and that was in the 60's if I remember correctly as I don't fish. That would have been the time Dad got his last fishing licence. And I live about 2-3 mile from Grand Lake St Marys.
