The guy who has my chipper now, told me it runs good after sitting a few years, but has to be careful using it. He changed the oil and filter. He thought something was wrong with the air cleaner, because it had oil in it. A friend of his explained the oil bath filters to him. Are oil bath air cleaners still being made? I always thought they were better. any thoughts? I have one tractor with a paper filter. the others are oil bath. Stan

Compared to each other, oil bath holds more dirt. Paper filters trap finer, smaller dirt. Simple as that.

I don't know of any still being made.

The reason they were used was for serviceability. In the early days equipment was sent to the far corners of the world, probably never to see a dealership again. Finding a paper element would have been highly unlikely, but having a quart of oil was, even if it was used oil.

As for better, I kinda doubt it. They were prone to be neglected, especially the cleaning of the wire mesh, which is commonly not even mentioned in the owners manual. In extreme cold weather, I doubt they did much of anything.
