Asking for a friend, where can he find the serial
number for his 850 and where is a good place to
buy brakes for it at a reasonable price?

Tractordata says the Serial number plate is located on the rear of the tractor, below the PTO shaft.

IIRC, it's stamped directly into the cast iron transmission housing beneath the seat area, as well.

Looks like all serial numbers take the same shoes, DEERE # M805898 (about $96 EACH, 4 used), A&I A-M805898, if you GOOGLE the A&I number, you can find them for around $70 each.

Type the deere number into their parts website and it will also give you the a and I price. I order alot of a and o through the local deere dealer.

Before you order brake shoes, check to see if you need both sides. When I got my 850, the brakes were weak so I ordered a full set. When I started taking them apart, I found that one side was wore out but the other side was in good shape, just needed adjusting.
