Quarries and Lime

Several different quarries in the area that sell ag lime to spread on crop/hay land, all have different lime. Some high mag, high cal some both high mag and high cal.How many people get a spec sheet on the lime coming from the quarry they get their lime from?

I get mine from a local quarry and its dolomitic limestone so its high in mag(10 %) and calcium is close to 40%. Lime and stone is pretty cheap in our area do to the abundance of limestone.

If we get lime from the Dundee area it is dolomitic. If we get it from Bellevue it is calcium lime. I guess it can be gotten from a couple other places too. Those are the more common places as far as I know though.

My dirt averages ph 7.4.

A little bit is down to 6.2, some is over 8.

I don?t know nothing about lime........

I sent samples in to A&L Greatlakes lab a while back, we are needing low Mg but high Ca lime so I got quarries report from AG Lime Council. The Napoleon quarry says their Brassfield line will give up 50% of Ca first year. I never realized the was so much difference from one to the other.

Our local quarry is about 40 miles away. About midway to Indy on I70.
I pick it at local co-op for around $20/ton. I use it on garden flower beds.

The quarry is about 15 minutes from me. I use to haul my own but the DOT got to hanging out there busting people hauling with farm tags that were plated for empty weight. That is only allowed if your hauling products from the field. I think it was around 8 bucks a ton.

I remember an uncle having lime hauled from the next county because it met his requirements. I hauled lime from here to the next county for a farmer(within 4 miles of a lime quarry)but it met his requirements. I have 4 quarries within 15 miles of me and trucks are meeting each other hauling lime past other quarries.

We use to have a guy out of the Kentucky coal fields that would haul grain to the river for us. He had a big aluminum dump trailer and would gross over a 100,000 with corn and on the flip side he would haul stone out of a quarry down towards Louisville. The stone was almost blue and alot harder then the stone around here.

Two reasons. A lot of people don't have much choice, lime is'nt as plentiful in some areas as it is in others.
Also, many people don't realize the difference there can be. And of course, any lime is better than no lime.

Lime here is three hours away. Last I knew it was $34.00/ton. After 160 miles on the truck it doesn't like to slide out very well. The drivers usually take 15 min or so to dump it, hoping that it will start to slide so that they don't have to put it up higher.
