Quandry....????

I bought a security system with infra red cameras that can be controlled by the owner. It does all kinds of stuff, like call you if it detects movement, PTZ, etc.

Anyway, after I got it and opened it up, I found it requires a Smart phone to be able to access. I have a flip top phone(old-timer).

Have a neighbor that visits family down south for weeks at a time. His tractors sit out in covered sheds. He has no security systems.

I thought that he may be able to use it since he has a Smart phone. I told him about the security system features and asked if he could use it. He said he could. He offered to pay me for it. I told him I'd give it to him but, if he didn't like it or couldn't use it, just give it back to me.

A few months later I asked how he liked the security system and camera usage. He said he never hooked it up but sold it.

That kinda irked me. What do y'all think?

Yeah, YOU coulda sold it yourself!

I once gave a friend a pile of old John Deere toys that my family had for 50+ years because he collected them. A few weeks later I found out he was telling mutual friends how ignorant I was for giving him a bunch of 1940's and '50's toys that were worth a few hundred dollars (apparently...). I never mentioned those toys again, but I damn sure NEVER gave him another thing!

Many folks will equate an act of kindness as evidence of stupidity.

I can see your surprise, but at thew time he did you a favor by taking it, as you insisted. What do you care now what he did with it: used it; sold it; or threw it in the trash?

Well, if he forgot the agreement to return it to you if he didn't use it, then I guess him selling it is OK. But if he sold it knowing that he agreed to return it, then it's pretty tacky to sell it. Tough situation, I can see why you feel taken advantage of. So now a guy decides if you should mention something or not, which depending on what he is like, might end a good friendship for the guy living near you. Tough call.

(quoted from post at 15:14:49 03/01/20)I told him I'd give it to him but, if he didn't like it or couldn't use it, just give it back to me.

I am talking about someone from across the road. I never mean't to imply anyone from this site.

Well I guess one thing you could do would be borrow something of equal value from him and after a few months, sell it. You know--an eye for an eye. Yes, you will still be irked, but now he will too.

He offered to pay me for it. I told him I'd[b:654c4848f0] give[/b:654c4848f0] it to him

When I "give" something to someone I consider it theirs to do as they please.

But I understand your point.
Had he been truthful when you ask him if he could use it and said no you could have found someone else to give it to.

A little late now but you could have turned the table and said to him;

Thank you for going out of your way and selling it for me.

How much did you get me for it?
I should give you something for your time.

That's not nice, I'd have handed it back to you or just said, here... had to sell it, here's the $$$. Never had it to start with anyways, what's the difference.

That kind of system, I installed as there is too much traffic in these parts now, even the TSC across the road was hit, ( they caught the guy in the act ). TSC used to shut the lights off at night, now they stay on all night.

This system is very easy to install, the batteries on the cameras are hooked to solar panels, I did not have to hardwire these, but will 2 others for separate more hidden system. The app on the smart phone is easy to use and you can call up every camera live anytime you want, 2 way talk and adjust the settings. I'm more would rather have a flip phone, type, but use a smart phone effectively for a lot of things, this is now one of them. I'm in the field or not home, I get the alert, or can check any time. You can share the video if you want to send it to someone, but there is a subscription to store it for longer than 24 hours, that is the one catch I'm not so sure of, but having it web based and no wires to run, seemed like a good option to get it done easily. I had to do something, was nice when I was away this weekend. Good to know what is going on, even if it's the faithful whitetail doe that hangs out by my back door, she's always around and that means no prowlers so to speak.

Even though you gave it to him you gave it for HIS use . Kind of a loser move on his part. I would feel disappointed myself.

"He offered to pay me for it. I told him I'd give it to him but, if he didn't like it or couldn't use it, just give it back to me."

The "if he didn't like it or couldn't use it, just give it back to me." half of that sentence never happens, never did and never will, so I don't bother mentioning that anymore when I give something away. No feelings get hurt that way.
