tired Deere

Throwing out a problem to see if bright minds out there can suggest something. My JD 2240 which has close to 10,000 hours on it has gotten tired this year--needs 2nd high to go up a hill I could scramble up in 4H, some black smoke under load. History of repairs includes the following- motor rebuild with rings, pistons etc 2500 hours ago, head gasket, rebuilt injector pump 2000 hours ago, clutch & throwout bearing last year plus miscellaneous starter, alternator, 4 wd solenoid rebuilds or replacement. My long time mechanic tested compression all good (and starts well even cold) tested injectors and replaced, adjusted valves, replaced air and fuel filters. Net result: no more smoke, a smidge more power but he & I and son agree that the improvement is marginal at best. He offered that the injector pump might be underperforming, but minor adjustments in timing didn't help and he said that he couldn't recommend rebuilding again unless I happened to have too much money lying around.

so any other ideas? and does anyone know of a place that will test an injector pump and tell you if rebuilding would be of any use?

Bottom line, I can use the tractor since it is mostly for loader work and the lighter parts of haying, but it would be nice to know if there is anything else to do.

Thanks.

The injection pump might just need repaired again, with new transfer pump blades and liner. Question, how does the engine start after a HOT shut down after five or ten minutes? That's a clue whether the pump hydraulic head needs replaced or not which is the heart of the pump. The engine is a good test stand too, IF a fellow understands how the pump and engine work together. I know I won't test a pump as is when there's an engine complaint, I tear the pump completely down and start over. If there IS a problem, I'll find it and won't have damaged the test bench injectors from any trash in the pump.

Are you sure you have a full flow of fuel to the pump. I had one last year that the manual pump used when bleeding the system had a bunch of junk in it that limited the flow and caused low power but otherwise ran fine. After taking the manual pump apart and cleaning the junk from it, normal power was restored.

Did you test the flow with the rigged fuel pump or just run the tractor? There are places that can get plugged where a pump would make no difference. I had one get plugged where the return teed into the supply line.
