Anniv Of Berlin Wall Falling Today!

Been 30 years ago today. Berlin unveiled a bronze statue of Ronald Reagan last night in celebration.
I remember sitting on a John Deere 60 pulling a New Idea 2 row picker while listening to some of it happening on the radio!
Seems so long ago!

After they got going busting up that wall that caused so many deaths, they broke up the concrete, and started selling it world wide as Soviet souvenirs. There is only a small section a couple of blocks long in a neighborhood and there is also a small park with a tower that they want to keep as a tourist attraction. A short video.

Berlin Wall

I remember it even though I was only 14. My dad was stationed in Germany in the mid 60s, and was watching it on the news telling me all about it.

I spent 2 years in Berlin in the 70's.Never thought I would see the fall of the wall. It was a very different place and time. I would express my feeling of todays political feelings but the magic poof would happen. I have many memories of those 2 years both good and bad. The statue of R.R. is very fitting.

We visited my cousin and fam in Germany last fall. I hadn't realized they were in the eastern sector. I asked him how awful it was, and he said not really awful at all. He and wife had good jobs, said life wasn't really that much different than today. About the only difference is they had to go east if they wanted to travel, couldn't go west. There were always some Russian soldiers standing around, but they didn't bother anybody or impede their activities. In fact, folks would get to know the Russian guards, and bring them coffee and cookies sometimes.

Budapest has a statue of Reagan too. They also still have bullet holes in buildings and a museum to the 1956 uprising and those patriots killed. Some who disappeared and are still not officially identified. Reality tends to be harsh and seeing these things in person drives it home.

Several years ago (10-15?) we had a girl exchange student from Ludwigshaven.
One of the things she brought for us was a small piece (smaller than a golf ball)
of concrete from the wall. As simple as it is, we still treasure it.

I was in the Navy in early 60's when the wall went UP! We had a lot of critical rated sailors involuntarily extended for indefinite period. Lot of groaning !

I went there right after the fall what a sight FREEDOM!..there were tombstones there with poeples names that tried to escape..I could not resist I had to shake hands with 2 East German guards I was scared I must admit but when I shook there hands and said wie gehts they smiled with hapiness and said wie gehts back my sister has the picture.

I toured E. Germany in the 90's lots of building in smaller towns looked rough, my German friend said they had not been painted since before the war. We went to lunch in a small restaurant, I have to say the kitchen was as modern as anything could be. When the former East German server found out I was an American, she cut up my food, hovered around keeping water and beer glasses full. My friend asked if I wanted another wife, and to be careful. I also have an East German flag that flew on the wall. Great trip, my friend was conscripted into the German Army at 16, worked for Robert Bosch in USA. He had lots of experiences to tell.
