790 JD hyd cylinder

Hello folks! Y'all are a great wealth of knowledge here. My pastor has a 790 John Deere tractor with a 300 loader on it. I know it is not a big hoss but it has been fine for him. The bucket tilt cylinders have started leaking quite bad and I am wondering if it would be cheaper to rebuild them or replace them. I've rebuilt fork lift cylinder in the past (40 years ago). I would like to know where to get the parts or new cylinders. I'm guessing they will be cheaper online some where. Thank you for your help, Rick

Hard to say without taking them apart first.

If they are in good condition, not bent, pitted, nicked, worn at the ends of the travel, then they will repair easily.

But if there are problems, might be better to replace them, or take a chance on seals understanding they might not last as long as they did when new.

If you are looking at parts be sure you look at the 300 loader for a 790 tractor and don't get parts for the 300 loader tractor. You can confirm what you need for JD part numbers using the on line catalogs. I would repair those cylinders unless badly damaged.

From what I looked at it appears:

On a straight 300 loader the complete 790 bucket cylinder is about $400. From JD the kits needed are AHC17687 (bore) about $66. and AHC16981 (rod) about $16.

For a 300X loader the complete cylinder is about $730. The rod kit is AHC16982 for about $30. The bore kit is AHC16965 for about $46.

Some of those kits cross to A&I. Likely some other vendors can cross them as well.

For reference of the ones I looked at; the bucket cylinder for the 300 is part number AH212554. The X bucket cylinder is AH210823 and the CX is AH210821. The X and CX use the same packing kits.
