Heard on news Montana snow

On the morning news. "Montana is blanketed in feet of snow and it's not even October yet. Parts of the state have received almost two feet of snow. Feet of snow have fallen and powerlines are down in the Rockies -- and it's only September"

42 years ago Terre Haute got slammed with a blizzard and many roofs collapsed. So when I hear of places getting 2 ft of snow the first thing I think of are roofs. My roof was making strange sounds. So I got on roof and shoveled snow. Neighbors roof had 3 layers of shingles and she had structural issues.

I see some amish building pole barns with trusses on 9 ft. I wonder how much snow they can handle?

When I was just out of high school, I went to work for as a mechanic for a marina.

They had floating boat storage, a conglomeration of mostly old boat houses with barrels for flotation.

Story goes that in years past there had been snow and ice storms that put so much weight on them they started to sink. Had to get on top and shovel snow off, which meant one slip and into the lake you went!

Thank God I never had to do that! I would have probably been looking for another job!

About 10 years ago we had the most snow at one time in my lifetime here in Central Virginia 28" at my place,no problems with any roof caving in,even the cheapie carports I use for
livestock shelters and hay storage did fine.In 1999 we got 2 snows 3 days apart with a total around 35" no problems then either, didn't have the carports then.

Buildings with the the trusses on 9 foot spacing are just fine if they're designed for 9 foot, we see it all the time. I think the purloins are 2X6 then. Our son has a shed in N WI where they get a lot of snow and the trusses are hand built and 9 feet apart, standing fine for 20+ years.

As a kid growing up most places we lived we had snow but Oct 31 is not weeks before. As for snow loads well that is both a thing of age and how it is built. There was a store not far from me called Hood's and it had been there since before 1976 when my dad got the farm and it stood up till a few years back when we had a bad ice storm and all that ice made it cave in

I just vacuumed 22 gallons of water from the shop floor as the result of wet snow melting from the pickup from 2 feedings of the girls(cows). Broke thru drifts almost hood high but thank goodness they were short. There are lots of trees that got trimmed because most of the leaves are still on the trees.
There is still crops to be harvested. Will be an interesting October. East Glacier recorded 4 feet of snow in places.Don't know much was received at Maris pass. Will be a muddy mess for the next week. Sure didn't plan on feeding hay this early. Thankfully it is not cold. Bud

I remember that one. Too much for my little AC5030 with a blade, went right out and bought a 3pt snowblower for the next storm.

I am pretty sure that several years ago we got a couple inches of snow one night.
The winter I spent in southern Ark. E. Camden - Locust Bayou area we got nearly a foot one day.
