looking for your opinions again found a jd 1020 with deer loader 3cly gas power steering everything works good rubber and metal but has 4192 hrs will be used mainly to unload and move to field 1000 lb round bales and to move some dirt gravel and manure
thanks for your advise again..seller wants $5000

I have 1. The rear lift is rated at 2000 lbs but there is no way I'd try that kind of load on a end loader; the front end was never meant for that. I agree that the price is on the high side. Mine has roughly those hours and I've rebuilt the hyd pump only significant issue.

One of my favorite small utility tractors. $5000 is a very reasonable price if in good shape. I looked at one this spring that sold for $7500. Excellent condition, yes. 1020 has a one ton (short ton) lift capacity on the three-point hitch. So no issue if lifting the bales on the back. If using the front loader? I have no idea what you have for a front loader. 300 is the yellow industrial version of the 1020 and it is rated for lifting 2000 lbs. with the front loader.

What model loader? The loader alone could be worth $2000 depending on what it is. If it is nice and the loader is good with no breaks or welds then the price is fine. Thousand pound bales will be no problem. Tom

I also have a 1020 and it's one of my favorite little tractors. Not for round bales though. Get a bigger tractor.

Drive it, take a look at the condition and note how it is equipped. Check if the rest of the tractor matches the low hours or if the tach/hour meter has been replaced. If it is field ready, has good tires, the hydraulics are strong and smooth, it has a heavy duty loader like a JD#48 or similar and is fully ballasted it could easily handle 1000 pound bales and the asking price is in the ball park.

Only JD ever made that was a worse tractor than the 2010 was the smaller 10 series!
Run, don?t walk away!!

I have to ask the model. Is it the LU, the RU or the HU?The HU on 36" rear rubber will have more traction than a RU on 28" rubber and I think the LU has only 24" rubber on the back and if you load the rear tires that 36" tire will have a lot more weight on it for traction than the smaller 28" tire, And with the bale on front I think you are going ro need all the rear weight you can get especially if ground is going to be slipery, may even need chains. When I was still farming I would have liked to have had a HU. But no 2020 or larger, to me the Ford 4100 was twice the tractor the 2020HU was. I owned the Ford and drove the Deere at work. And I drove my uncles 3020 and you could not give me that thing to use. But the way those 3020's seem to be selling for that 1020 if a HU is not over priced.

Cant use a toy tractor to move man size load, front axle will bust hydraulics were bad on that series too

Randy
Does this 1020 have a straight or swept-back frt axle? If swept-back frt axle I'd be concerned that 1000# rd bale on FEL would be too far in frt of frt tires when being carried.

1020 & 1010/2010 aren't in the same class of tractors. 1020 is much better than either of the other 2 models.

I can't believe some of the comments below. That series of JD tractor was light years ahead of anything else built at the time. If it has been taken care of it should still be a good machine. If abused and neglected they can become a hydraulic repair nightmare though. I would sure like to know where you find loader tractors with the features of the JD 1020 for less than $ 5,000 ?

Mike ..... Randy asked for opinions if I read his post correctly. I don't see him saying that he was only looking for positive comments. I think he got what he asked for, albeit different than yours. Why can't you believe some of those posts? You aren't suggesting that people are raising red flags for no good reason I hope.
