Good quality tarps?

Are good quality poly tarps still being made? If so, where do you buy them?

Local sources only have cheap flimsy stuff that grommets tear out of and you can almost punch a hole in them with your finger.

If you catch a truck tarp place at the right time they might have a used truck tarp laying out back. A tarp off a hopper trailer could be up to and up to 53 feet long though most are in the 42 foot range. There will be some bad spots obviously but if it is free who cares?

If you don't mind advertising, I purchased a heavy vinyl billboard sign that was removed and they last many years. Got it off C-list. 50 bucks for a 14 x 48 covering my woodpile. The helicopters and planes see an ad. Also great for hay bales.

I was wondering the same thing. I just bought a tarp from the local Ace or True Value or whatever it is. I thought a tarp is a tarp, just pick which size. No. Used it once and the cheap, thin tarp material tore right out of a few gussets. Are you kidding? The thing is so thin. Useless. I have tarps that are very old and have had a ton of use and they are still holding up fine. Some good ideas on here for substitutes.

Yes... old billboard tarps last years. I use them on the tarp over the topsoil. Numerous sites on the web sell them. Bad news is the shipping is as much as the tarps.

Google up where your nearest billboard company has an office.

My nearest is Clear Channel outdoor advertising.

I stopped in earlier this year and asked the manager nicely for a few. He wanted to know what for. I told him to cover hay and I would not be selling them on craigslist.
He said as long as I promised not to sell them and to use them black side up we could load up as many as we wanted.
We loaded up about 25 for free.
They had about five semi loads waiting to go to the landfill.
They can't be recycled because they are vinyl impregnated fiberglass like cloth.

I've been having good luck with harbor freight tarps. I have a parked trailer I put a tarp on that is holding up well for the third year now.

I'm with Stephen on this one. Have a HF tarp on a portable carport that I put on 9 years ago and it is still going strong. It is one of the double sided ones. Silver on one side and brown on the other. Think it is their heavy duty model.

So it sounds like my experience with local poly tarps from the farm and home and Ace hardware is not unique.....the stuff most of these places sell now is crapola.

(Tarped down some hay yesterday......used a couple of the new tarps and they were like using bedsheets....plus had holes in it you could see light coming through and that was out of the package. Also used a 10' x 20' I bought about 20 years ago and it was something like 10X as thick and still far and away better than anything I can find today).

Needing an 8' x 10' tarp today, so may give Harbor Freight a chance.......although HF is not a place I ever go.

Will look into the billboard signs......although those all appear to be vinyl.....not the poly tarps with reinforced corners and grommets.

Don't need heavy truck tarps from the local canvas places.

Did remember online places like Farmtek.......they sell different weights of poly tarps. Some of those might still be OK.

Yes, the billboard stuff is basically vinyl coated fiberglass cloth.
The edges are hemmed and the hem is large enough to slide in
1-1/4" tubing from each corner, I use the top rail often used on chainlink fencing. Some hems are big enough for 2" dia.
No grommets?, no big deal as you slide in the steel tube and then tie thru the hem around the tube wherever you like.
Not gonna let go like a puny little grommet which then rips a long ways before you catch it.
The tube keeps all four edges straight and taught with less tie downs.
