A friend has a Ferguson TO-20 for garden work but now needs a tractor with live pto to run a pto potato digger. What are some comparable sized tractors with live pto in a price range to the TO-20?

I have an IH 424 diesel, which isn't much larger physically that has live PTO.

Depending upon location, he might find a gas version reasonably.

GOOD little tractor.

Considering a TO-20 will bring less than $1K in my area, not many LPTO tractors around for that kind of money. He also needs something with a lot slower gearing. My David Brown 885 would be about perfect.

Don't discount a lot of the older compact tractors with 4 x 4 even one smaller than that to-20 tractor can out work those.

Ferguson TO-35, MF 35 or 135 are about the same physical size with about 50% more horsepower. Most of them have live PTO but not all. Look for an "M" in the serial number on the 35.

Well, he wants live or better yet independent pto, and if he doesn?t know he wants more gears to be able to choose slower speeds as well.

Hard to get more features for the same price, he just has to up his budget some. Or get lucky on a good price find.

The features he wants started appearing in the mid to late 1950s sometimes as options, so he needs to look at 1955 and newer tractors and see if the machine he has
is so equipped. As a general guide.

Is he selling the to.? That would give him a little more budget. If at all possible you want to get a newer compact with fwa. and hydro.

The reason the TO-20 is considered a
cheaper tractor is because it doesn't have
the features your friend and others want.
I wouldn't mind having a cheap tractor to
put a rotary mower on and using it at a
different property. Didn't take to long to
figure out that by the time I got something
new enough to have independent pto it
wasn't cheap anymore. Just wasn't worth it.

It would be bigger (bigger is better) but Allis D15s seem to sell pretty cheap - so do the D14s - if they has a power director transmission.

There aren't any, unless your friend is extraordinarily lucky and/or patient.

That said, for $2,500+, he should be able to find a MF 35/135 (deluxe) or Ford 860/1 or similar if he does not expect everything to be well, good tires, etc.

Allis Chalmers WD has live PTO via the hand clutch. You can find running ones of those for $750-1,000.

While I bleed JD green . Those little Massey 35,135,235,65,165,265 and about a dozen other similar models . They are among some of the best value per $$$ on the used market .

Even though Iv'e been around tractors my entire life, please tell me again what difference there is between live PTO and independent PTO. To me, they are the same thing !!!

My understanding is that a live pto has a separate clutch from the tranny clutch and has ONE lever (or pedal) that controls both clutches, whereas, an independent pto also has 2 clutches but it has a TWO levers/pedal controlling the clutches. So the independent pto has no interaction with the tranny and it's clutch.

MF 35 with Perkins 3 cyl diesel, live and power steering. Torque curve peaks at 1000 and PTO is 1800. It will pull the skin off a Rhino.

Small ones are for local hobby farmers that surround the DFW metroplex. Same here, a 60-125 hp could be had for less......butttt lotta hours.
