John Deere 4020 serial numbers

Hello everybody,

New to the forum here. I need some help identifying serial numbers on a 4020 I am working on. The type is 6404DH-01 and the serial number is 288520R. If anybody could tell me anything about those numbers I would appreciate it. I am not having much luck online. Currently having fuel delivery issues, the fuel system seems like it has been messed with and components have been moved from their original place. It does not look like any 4020 setup I have seen. Anything helps.

Thanks,
Nick

You are looking at the ENGINE model and serial number (it's a 404 cubic inch engine), the TRACTOR serial number is on the back above and to the right of the drawbar.

From the ENGINE number you posted, I'd suspect the engine is from a 6600 or 7700 combine, which likely explains the oddities you are seeing.

Is the serial plate upside-down, the combine engines typically were, as you had to bend over the engine from the front, then, from that angle, looking at the back of the engine, the number was easy to read.

Thanks for your help everybody! I appreciate the information. Makes sense what u said Bob, I bet the motor is from a combine. I don't have the tractor at my property but I will look up the tractor serial# soon. The tractor doesn't have a side console and the hydraulic controls are on the left of the dash. Also one more question. On the left wall of the dash there is a transmission disconnect lever (it is a powershift), unfortunately it looks like somebody cut it off, anybody know where I can buy one to replace it?

Thanks,
Nick

I wouldn't think it would be too tough to find a used transmission disconnect lever at a tractor wrecking yard, but they are no fun to replace.

Unless the steering pedestal has been removed from the tractor for some other reason.

A year back, I dealt with one that was stuck so tight I had to remove it and the casting it pivots in to get it loose and free up the bushings.

I had the tractor split at the time and cut a 3" hole with a holes aw to get a punch in there to R+R the rollpin that holds it to the shaft!

On the other hand, it is just a piece of flat steel bent and tapered to make a "stylish" handle, it wouldn't be hard to replicate and weld to what's left of the old one.
