Most weight bearing capacity drawbar or 3pt

I want to fabricate a pintle hitch to use occasionally on my 1085 Massey. I can create something that slides over my tractors drawbar or something that uses my 3 point hitch assembly. Does the drawbar have more weight bearing capacity than the 3pt hitch system?

In most cases yes. Be careful that the pintle is held for tongue weight as well as pilling force. Also account for direct pull on the structure. The 3 point could be used if a quick adapter is attached to the 3pt and the pentle attached to the adapter. The side to side sway can be stopped with control braces or?, but is needed to assure good trailing of the device being towed. The only advantage of the drawbar type may be solidity. Its disadvantage is that it may block normal drawbar use. Jim

Be careful with a 3pt, they don?t mostly have downforce and can rear up in a bad way with a trailer hooked up.

I think the drawbar would be the most solid hookup, the 3pt would be more fun for quickly moving a bunch of stuff short distances across a yard.

What you really have to look out for when something like a trailer is hooked to the 3pt hitch is when you go downhill the trailer can push the hitch up in the air and cause major
problems.

Pull trailers quite a bit with the 3 point hitch you do want to make sure you have more weight on the tongue than the tail end

A hitch mounted on your 3 pt is great for moving EMPTY trailers around your yard, but could be deadly with too much weight.

Gentleman, Thanks very much to each of you for the sound information!. Much appreciated!

Problem solved. Use a chain about the right length to reach from one arm to the other, with it completely up. Then hook to the drawbar. Now you have the best of both worlds lots of weight carrying capacity, and stability .

Caterpillar guy, I am not sure that I am picturing this correctly. Are you suggesting that you pick the tongue of the trailer up with the chain between the lower links and then hook it to the draw bar? If so I don't see that as working too well. Also, for me a hitch adapter, that you can buy from many on line stores or you can build yourself, enables you to back up to a trailer, raise the 3 pt so that the ball goes into the hitch, and drive off to spot the trailer in a different location, without dismounting, which can be very helpful for jockeying multiple trailers around. Again, as I posted earlier I don't recommend this type of hooking up for a significant load.
