Overall Rear Wheel Width - Row Crop Tractors

Looking for stability on hills with a row crop tractor. For those of you working hills/slopes, what is the overall width do you have your rear tractor tires set - outside to outside? 96 inches, 102 inches - what is that width? If you are making hay, how does the wider width work with your disc mower conditioner and/or baler as you make sharp turns? Are you getting into the implement tongue (thinking 38's) ?

Thanks!
Bill

Well Bill since I am nolonger on the farm maybe my experience is of no use; yet I would like to share my experience of many years ago.
I came in from the corn field on a hot Saturday morning cultivaring corn with a IHC farmall BN with two row mounted scufflers and the wheels turned out wide. Came into the barn yard at 3/4 throttle, sharp right turn, forgetting that dad had placed a 2 inch thick by knee high wooden box nead the well head. Hit it with left rear wheel, was air born for at least twice , maybe more, the length of the tractor, left wheel up in the air.
Later I realized, had it been our neighbours supperC or
H or M I would have instantly roled the tractor.
THE MOAL OF THE STORY in my thinking, the lower to the ground the center of gravity the better.

Hope you are able to find one that is centered low to the ground for the hill work you are describbing.
Keep safe.

If your hills are that steep you need wide spaced wheels, maybe you shouldn't be on them. However,I would use duals if my fields were that steep and I was bothered.

Bill,
I know you do mostly hay - I don't know the distance, but I have mine set the according to the width of my swath when I mow, so I'm not driving on the hay (I have a 9' Haybine). I run a lot of steep ground and I don't have any troubles - I've got one field that is steep enough that I almost have to drive on the windrow to keep the hay going into the baler pick up. I can measure this weekend if you would like.

One of my hay tractors is set at 38 inch rows, it?s about 8 feet outside to outside. Has fluid in all 4 tires, very stable tractor.

Other is a compromise fits down 30 and 38 inch rows. Little narrower. It doesn?t have a cab so center of gravity is slightly lower.

My heavy tractor has duals spaced to fit down 30 inch rows, it needs more than a 15 foot door to fit through.

All three are pretty stable.

Low and weight down low and wider is all stuff you can adjust or be mindful of.

We are not going to put a tractor on any hill that is unsafe, however, all we do is hay, zero row crops. I don't see the need to have wheel centers for 30 inch rows. I'm inclined to take the wheels on my 756 out to 96 or 102 (the width of a trailer that would haul them) just for another measure of stability.

Curious if anyone has their wheels set out that far and why.

Thanks!
Bill

Thanks!

If it's not to much trouble, I'd be interested to know outside to outside your wheel width.

I'm on about the same type hills have my larger row crop style tractors set out to about 8ft,no disadvantage to having them wide and does make the tractor more stable on hillsides especially if the lower wheel drops in a hole or something like that. Also as said the center of gravity plays a significant part in stability too.

I have them set out to 8 feet outside to side 480:80:38 on a 4020 it will stand up on any hill I?ve ever been on no real problem turning .

My IH 826 that I use on the 9ft 2 in discbine has tires set at 9 ft outside to outside. (maybe 9 ft 1 in). It totally straddles the mowed hay on my next pass but fits between the standing hay.. I lay the swath as wide as I can straddle with the 18.4 tires. Tomorrow when I rake, the windrow can be put on the 36.8" (2X 18.4) strip of dried ground. That 108 or 109" width works well on these s.w. Pa hills.
