Cant identify what year my tractor is

821 tractor

New User
Hi, I bought a Ford 821 tractor ? but the tractor has a cream hood and rims and the engine, frame and axel is red. The hood has a blue sticker that says Ford 4000 industrial but when I research this it states that ford did not go into the 1000 series until 1960 and painted all 1000 series tractors blue. I tried looking up the serial numbers but the only thing I think I figured out was its a 821.

here are the serial numbers: On the top its says 821 Underneath the 821nit says 148165

Can anyone help me identify what year this tractor is and give any information on these serial numbers?

thanks for any help!!!

148165 is a 1961 model.

So at least that transmission came out of a 1961 821 tractor.

The buff hood and rims would be off of a 4000 industrial.

Now a little history.
The industrial tractors go back farther than 1960.
The 1801 was the first industrial.
Then came the 2000/4000 that was red and buff from 1960 to 1962
Then came the 2000/4000 that was blue and buff from 1962 to 1964 even though some were built into 1965
In the beginning of 1965 they were building 4 cylinder tractors and the newer 3 cylinder models.

Wow, I have spent three weeks every night trying to figure tis out so I can get the right parts although I am reading many of these tractors are interchangeable.

So the last question is my 821 is or is not considered a 4000? just replaced parts possibly?

Thanks, very new here but I have learned more in the last 10 minutes than I have in three weeks trying to find information on this tractor

Yes a series of holes means it's adjustable.
If you look close you can tell the axle is 3 pieces.
A center section and 2 outer sections.

So that pretty much proves you have a 1961 821 tractor that someone painted the hood and fenders buff to look like a 4000 industrial model.

Lots of (but not all) parts interchange on these 4 cylinder tractors.
We would have to know what parts you need to tell you for sure.

If the tractor would have been a real 1960 to 1962 4000 industrial this is what it would originally have looked like.

821, paint means very little on a 60 year old machine. It has most likely been repainted at least twice and sometimes repaints were done in later colors.

an 821 is considered an 801 series tractor, but the numbers only apply to the transmission and the tractor that was attached to it when built, as others have said lots may have happened since it was built
an 821 was -

8 = 8** - Four wheel utility type with adjustable front axle, 172 ci gas, LP-gas or 172 ci diesel engine
2 = *2* - Four speed transmission, no PTO or 3 point lift
1 = **1 - "01" series '57 - '62
