INSTALLATION OF NEW OIL PRESSURE GAGE CORRECTLY

Hi all,

Got some of my new gages, Getting ready to install oil pressure gage. There is no installation guide, but can someone answer for me: Since it is hooked to a line to measure oil pressure, do I need to prime the line and the gage with oil before hooking it up? Otherwise it will have air trapped in the bourdon tube, and air compresses much more than oil. Just wondering how it is supposed to be hooked up. I know the water temp gage is a sealed system with the capillary tube pre-charged with a gas.

Thanks!
Brent

Should not have to prime it, pressure is the same whether it's a gas or liquid. On some installations, all the oil in the gauge and line will run back into the engine when it is shut down anyways, due to gravity.

(quoted from post at 20:41:58 01/22/19) No need to worry about the air it will compress to the point it will still give true reading plus over time it will bleed off

Awesome! Thanks guys!

If worried about it with engine running just crack the line and bleed like a brake line retighten problem solved. Though I would not worry about it anyway.

The air won't change the reading. If anything, leaving the air in the line will help cushion the gauge from vibrations, give a steady reading and prolong the gauge life.

The most important thing to be concerned with is proper routing and installation of the tubing.

I will never use plastic line, ever!

Be sure the line is properly secured to avoid vibration stress, or contact with anything that can abrade the line.

Also check the thread pitch of the adapter. Some engines are NPT, some are BSPT, (American or British thread). The threads are real close, but just different enough to leak and/or damage the block threads. You'll need to compare the thread pitch of the original adapter to the replacement.

Like Steve said, air is good, and if there are no leaks it should stay there. Many times gauge lines have a loop in them to maintain some air for a cushion, easier on gauges.
