Followup to Merry Christmas

I finally got to read the responses to my post. Southern Ray, you nailed it! I was out of town yesterday until my son called to say my sink was backed up. Daughter had been at the house baking. I got home about 5 and we worked on it till 9. Finally I poured a second gallon of draino in and went to bed. This morning it had drained so I boiled a couple of gallons of water and poured that in. Problem solved. Have I mentioned I hate plumbing.

We've been having a devil of a time with the bath tub. I think I finally got it with the shop vac.

We bought this house in 1982. It was build in '69 in what then was a rural area, no city codes. For the most part it is well built - except the plumbing, both supply and drain. I have found galvanized fittings connected to copper and lousy soldering, all by way of leaks. It appears the drain lines are too flat for good flow to the septic tank. But I am not moving! I'd have to pack with a front end loader. Merry and Happy! P.S. My late wife dropped her wedding ring in the shower and it went down the slotted grate. i got it out using the shop vac with a smaller extension tube. The grate is one with little round holes now.

This old house is the same way. Dad buried some old used four inch gas pipe back in the 50s,cemented over some of it,some is hanging out over a crawl space. He used everything from 3/4 inch galvanized to garden hose to drain sinks and stuff in to it. He just burned holes in it with an arc welder to run things in the top of it. When we remodeled the kitchen and bathroom,I went to inch and a half PVC from the tub and sinks, but I ran them in to that old steel pipe. Later on,it rusted through and it's back up under the house where it's about impossible to get to. I split some four inch PVC,slathered it with silicone and clamped it around the pipe, but it still dripped.

I ended up splitting some three inch and drove it inside of it. We've had trouble with that bathtub drain every since. I don't know if I drove a bunch of rust up inside of it or what happened.

LOL, thanks that's my favorite.

I can be happy just to have wall stops that will shut off the water without having to go outside and shut off the main valve just to change out a simple faucet.

Walmart has a good drain cleaner in a Red or Yellow jug for about $7.00. works better than Draino at my house.
