What engine oil to use

I have a 1967 IH 656 diesel with the 282 engine. I've always used IH 30W oil. I'm out of this oil and would like to use something different as the nearest IH dealer is now over 50miles away. I use Mobil 5W-40 Turbo Diesel full synthetic in a 2008 New Holland compact. Would this be a good choice for my 656? If not, what would be, other than a specific IH brand? Thanks for any advice!

15w-40 hd diesel oil would be best. 5w-40 hd diesel oil if your doing a lot of running in the very cold. These oils have a BUNCH of additives for hd use, to fight acids, moisture, wear, keep dirt and soot from clumping, and about 50 more things so its hard to beat and economical... wally world and everyone sells it as all diesel trucks run it.

I am a firm believer in Rotella 15-40 diesel oil in every tractor I have. Especially the older models like that. Gas or diesel engines.

All good replies ...... but I would guess that you could use pretty much any off-the-shelf engine oil
available today and that engine wouldn't know one way or the other, and it would perform equally well with
any of them. Outside temperature of course a factor for the SAE oil viscosity that you choose (10W30 or
15W40, etc). I suspect that any "economy oil" available today would outperform premium oils from 50 years
ago. Same thing applies to a lot of things I think, can you imagine an NBA team from 2018 playing
basketball against the 1967 76'ers champs?

1540 fleet diesel. Any good brand will do.I run the same 1540 in all my tractors(from F12 to706 to 1456),combines,grain truck,pickup,car,ATV,motorcycle,lawnmower?..One oil for all. Keeps it simple,no mixups. You can even run it in your new tractor. The full synthetic will probably cause your old tractor to leak

Is no one concerned about the lack of ZDDP in modern oil? Only roller camshafts can use the new oils; otherwise, it will eventually cause your camshaft to go flat. The real old engines from the beginning up until the 40's didn't have enough valve spring pressure to need the extra protection.

I have never delo at our napa but looked it up and it is a Chevron product and Chevron , Texaco, and Shell are one
group.

Rotella 4T 15-40 has zinc in it. You can find it in your racing oils like Lucas, Royal Purple and other. Lucas sells a zinc you can add to oil.

What about 15-40 Delvac? It's almost free after the rebate! Does it have the necessary additives for older
engines? I have been using it in our Farmall C.

The house brand 15w40 diesel rated oil sold at Walmart is good enough for just about any diesel engine accept the most modern ones that need the high-dollar synthetics.

I believe the amount of ZDDP in Rotella T is pretty minimal (in parts per million). Most Rotella doesn't have any I don't think. I'm sure those racing and high performance oils have lots of it but you pay the price, ever see how much it costs? A lot of knowledgeable engine designers say that modern oils are fine as is without the ZDDP additive.

A engine made in last 20 years have every thing running on rollers but old engine are flat contact.

Lack of zinc in a low compression flat tappet engine isn't an issue. Lots of people were still running nondetergent oil in those engines back in the 1950s and 60s.
