Clutch slip...

Hi all,
I am going to pickup a David Brown 25d or 30d on Saturday, and he says the clutch gradually started slipping bit by bit, until it cant hardly move on the flat.
It is a boat tractor, and he used it to launch a 18 foot fiberglass boat.
He says that it often got submerged in the salt water, and I am wondering if salt water in clutch housing has caused clutch slip?
I would like to find out in advance what might be wrong with the clutch and how to fix it?
Thanks!
Joshua

First thing to check is pedal free play. If there's no free play the clutch is probably just misadjusted. That said, if it's been slipping long the clutch disk may be damaged enough to require replacement.

My guess is saltwater got to the pressure plate and flywheel, though. I would definitely figure on a tractor split. You might get lucky, but luck and saltwater seldom go together.

I would be more concerned with the salt water baptism than the clutch.

Especially if the engine, transmission, rear end, hydraulics, steering have been sitting with saltwater in them.

The salt water would not have caused the clutch to slip. Maybe when it was actually wet, but once dry it would have returned to normal.

Either it is out of adjustment, as in no freeplay in the linkage, or it is worn out. Possibly the linkage is rusted in the down position, won't let the clutch fully engage. Salt water would also have a detrimental effect on the release bearing and pilot bearing. If it's been parked, the clutch disc is probably rusted to the flywheel, stuck.

Either way, it will eventually need to come apart. Could easily turn into a very frustrating and expensive ordeal.

> He did say that after every fishing day he greased it with salt water repellent

Did he also sprinkle it with holy water?

Saltwater + Iron = Bad News

I would look at what places the salt water could get in. I could drive my old Fords in water half the way up the cases all day and not get enough in to cause any problem. No significant amount of water can get in a low place unless there is a place higher up for the air to vent.
